I would still stay designing your site for 800x600 is good idea as it allows ALL your users to see your site as it is. The need for horizontal screening puts of surfers. However, if you want it to fit all screen sizes, you can keep fixed width size in your sidebars (like 200px) and the main content panel width can be adjusted by percentage so that it fills the screen (like 90%).

Perfect timing! I'm redesigning my web site, but when tested it on a friend's PC it didn't work quite right. I realized she had her monitor resolution set at 800x600, and she explained that she prefers a lower rseolution so it is easier for her to read screen text. Switching the resolution to 1024x768 made my site look perfect.

I was just getting ready to research this (my site stats don't include monitor resolution, unless I overlooked it), and was worried that 800x600 resolutions were the norm. Thanks to you, I can now put the finishing touches on my redesigned site instead of retooling it to fit the lower res. I realize that our stats will vary on this, but anything in the 6% ballpark is fine with me.

This has been an enormous help, thanks for posting it!
