“The final chapter in the Star Wars movie saga grossed a record $US50 million ($66 million) from its first 24 hours in North American theatres, the highest box office tally ever for a single day, 20th Century Fox said.

Opening yesterday on some 9400 screens in nearly 3700 US and Canadian theatres, Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith generated $US16.5 million ($21.8 million) in ticket sales from sold-out debut midnight showings packed with costumed fans and went on to accumulate $US50,013,859 ($66.12 million) in receipts by day’s end.

The unprecedented sum easily surpassed the previous opening-day box office record set last June by Spider-Man 2 – $US40.4 million ($53.4 million) – and the $US44.8 million ($59.2 million) single-day benchmark Shrek 2 grossed a year ago in its fourth day of release.” reports Herald Sun

Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith has broken all previous 1st day box office records by grossing $50 million on the first day. It completes the six-part epic George Lucas launched nearly 30 years ago.
