TDK 100GB Blu-ray Disc with 4 Layers

Recently News.co reported Toshiba announced the development of a higher-capacity HD DVD disc which it is promoting as the next-generation DVD disc format. Previous versions of the format stored up to 30GB, but the latest version can read into a third layer on an HD DVD disc so it can hold up to 45GB of data. The 45GB version of the disc is a read-only version.

Now PCWorld reports “TDK has developed a prototype Blu-ray Disc that can store twice as much data, and record it at twice the speed, as existing Blu-ray Discs. It can record data at 72 megabits per second, double the 36 mbps rate for current Blu-ray Discs. TDK increased the write speed by using a more powerful laser and making some changes to the material of the disc’s recording layer.

To achieve the higher capacity, TDK added two additional recording layers to the disc to take it up to four layers. Blu-ray Disc stores 25GB on each recording layer and the standard currently includes single layer and dual layer versions.”

So the disc format wars continue as usual. By increasing layers to four, TDK has been able to expand the storage to 100GB (Your CD stores about 0.7GB). One wonders what the limit of storage is? - maybe unlimited storage is not too far!
