First Nepalese Wedding on Mount Everest

Two Nepalese climbers, bride Moni Mulepati, 24, and groom Pem Dorjee, 23, exchanged their vows at 29,035 feet on top of Mount Everest. This is possibly the first wedding on the summit. The couple was part of the Rotary Centennial Everest Expedition and scaled the peak with 45 other climbers.

“We were there only for 10 minutes, just enough for us to get married and our friends to take pictures of us,” Mulepati told The Associated Press.”They briefly took off oxygen masks and donned plastic garlands while the groom put traditional red powder on the bride’s forehead — for Nepalese the equivalent of exchanging rings.”

“Mountaineering officials in Katmandu said they don’t keep such records, but they have not heard of anyone getting married on the summit in the more than five decades that people have been scaling the slopes.”
