Spam Poison : Fighting Spam Robots for Email Privacy

November 2nd, 2005
ADVERTISEMENTS

You have probably already heard about of Spam Poison, if not, at least you might have seen the Spam Poison antipixel button on several blogs and websites. So what is this antispam tool?

Have you seen more and more spam emails appearing in your bulk / spam folder? It is well known that spam bots visits and track websites, blogs and forums quickly scanning all pages and sites linked to it for email addresses. Email addresses posted on blogs and forums etc. are picked up and your email account becomes a target of spammers for email marketing using bulk email softwares. So what is the antispam solution?

How does Spam Poison work?

“All you have to do is link to this page so that whenever a spammer’s robot scans your page, it will be sucked into this one…These links will redirect email harvesting bots to trap sites that will feed it with an almost infinite loop of dynamically generated fake email addresses, mostly on known spammer owned domains! This will render their harvested lists pratically useless and of no commercial value.”

I really dont know if it will work since they do not clarify any further about the mechanism or some results they had, but they have gained a lot of incomming links. If it works, I think spammers will be smart enough to program these bots to avoid that site anyway.
