Yahoo! Answers is a place where people ask each other questions on any topic, and get answers by sharing facts, opinions, and personal experiences. For free!

Categorize your question and it is open for others to answer for 14 days. You can extend or shorten this time period. Once your question is answered, select the best answer, or have the community vote for the best answer.

The Yahoo Search Blog announces the launch

“We want to give anyone a place to tap the collective wisdom of the Internet for advice, recommendations, theories, jokes, … whatever. Anyone can answer. It’s free. And once your question is answered, you get to pick the best answer and the whole thread is archived and searchable. So in addition to getting answers, you’re helping to add to the “the Internet’s” collective knowledge.

Of course, it has categories for the questions, per category RSS feeds, notifications, and other goodies too. So if there’s a topic you know a lot about or want to know more about, here’s your chance to find a community of like minded people and spread the knowledge.”

This offers competition to Google Answers, a paid service. Google Answers is a way to get that help from Researchers with expertise in online searching. You specify how much you’re willing to pay for an answer, the Researcher will post the answer to Google Answers, and you will be notified via email. The advantage is that Google has screened these researchers, quality control is possible, and you can get are refund too if you are not satisifed with the answers.
