Install WordPress Widgets Plugin by Automattic
Now you can install Wordpress Widgets to your Wordpress blogging platform and easily add more functionality to your blog.
By installing the Widgets plugin by Automattic (download zip or svn) and using a widget-ready theme, you can bring the popular customization feature from WordPress.com to your very own, hosted WordPress installation. (WordPress 2.0 required)
Widgetizing Themes is fun. If you have basic PHP editing skills, then you can update any theme for use with widgets in a few minutes, depending on complexity of the Wordpress theme.
WordPress Widgets API (Application Programming Interface) includes WordPress theme authors, plug-in authors and anyone who would like to write a stand-alone widget assuming you have a basic understanding of PHP scripting.

The bad thing about being an early adopter of the newest version of Wordpress is that there aren’t any plug-ins you can use that is fully compatible!
As of now, I trawled through the entire list of anti-spam plug-ins in the Wordpress Codex, and all (if not, most) support only up till 1.5!
Then when a new version comes out, everyone upgrades again to find that plugs-in were written for that older version! And the cycle perpetuates.

Trying to download the widget app from automattic.com . There site has so much traffic that I can not even view the site. If I get the file, I am going to mirror.
