Register a .EU Domain Name : Sunrise Phase Over
April 10th, 2006 | Filed under Events, Tips, Tools..eu is the new country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the European Union. Now you too can register a domain name that ends with .eu in the European Union.
It started on December 7, 2005 with the Sunrise phase when only holders of prior rights like trademarks and company names could apply for a .eu domain name. This was done to prevent cybersquatting, where people register domain names of popular trademarks in order to make fast money by selling or auctioning domain names.
Since April 7 2006, called the Land Rush period - the .eu is open for full general registration and it is now possible for anyone within the EU (European Union) to register any available .eu domain name.
EURid (The European Registry of Internet Domain Names) is the not-for-profit organisation, established in Belgium, and has been selected by the European Commission to operate the new .eu top level domain. EURid has more than 1000 accredited domain name registrars from all over the world. 702 684 new .eu Internet domain names in first four hours after .eu opened to the public.
