Google Joins Banned Books Week 25 Years Anniversary
September 13th, 2006Banned Books Week is being held from September 23-30, 2006. Bookstores and libraries around the country will celebrate the freedom to read with exhibits, readings and special events during Banned Books Week. First observed in 1982, Banned Books Week reminds Americans not to take this precious democratic freedom for granted.
Google Book Search joins your freedom to read by creating a special page where you can Explore Banned Books. Google Book Search is joining libraries and bookstores across the country to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Banned Books Week – a nationwide initiative to help people learn about and explore banned books.
Read more about Challenged and Banned Books
A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials. Challenges do not simply involve a person expressing a point of view; rather, they are an attempt to remove material from the curriculum or library, thereby restricting the access of others.
The positive message of Banned Books Week: Free People Read Freely is that due to the commitment of librarians, teachers, parents, students and other concerned citizens, most challenges are unsuccessful and most materials are retained in the school curriculum or library collection.
Banned Books Week is sponsored by the American Booksellers Association, the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, the ALA, the Association of American Publishers, the American Society of Journalists and Authors, and the National Association of College Stores. It is endorsed by the Library of Congress Center for the Book.
