Penelope Project for Free Open Source Eudora Email Client
October 13th, 2006 | Filed under Computers, Tools.QUALCOMM Incorporated and the Mozilla Foundation announced that future versions of the popular Eudora email program will be based upon the same technology platform as the open source Mozilla Thunderbird email program.
Called the Penelope” project, its intention is to join the Eudora user experience with the Mozilla platform and produce a version of Eudora that is open source and based on mozilla and Thunderbird and complements it. Mozillazine says that Qualcomm has assigned six employees to the Penelope project, including original Eudora developer Steve Dorner, who started working on the program in 1988, three years before it was purchased by Qualcomm.
Why is Eudora moving to open source?
“QUALCOMM has decided not to remain in the email market because it is not in alignment with the core business or strategic goals. By moving Eudora to an open source product, QUALCOMM can exit the Eudora business while still supporting Eudora users and advancing the Eudora e-mail client at a faster pace than before, through the power of the open source development community.”
The open source version of Eudora is targeted to be released during the first half of 2007 and will be free. Once the open source version of Eudora is released, QUALCOMM will cease to sell Eudora commercially. Until then, they have released the final commercial version - Eudora 7.1 for Windows and 6.2.4 for Mac OSX that are available for the reduced price of $19.95 with a six-month period of technical support.

I have been using Eudora E-mail Program since it came out in 1991. I am very disappointed at what you are not doing for the Programs or it’s long standing & faithful customers. A lot of are trying to go along with the change but without tech support on the new version it is very hard. I have Version7.1.0.9 Paid and I have Version 8 on my computers and I am having the same problem on both using under the Win XP Pro operating system. I can receive email but I can not send. This problem started about 3 weeks after I up graded my computer to WinXP Pro in Dec 2007. I have 1 test machine with Win 98Se still on it and Eudora &.1.0.9 is working fine there. I could sure use some hepl to determine how to fix the problem so that I can not only use it myself but, help all hte customers who I convinced to use Eudora Pro and that is a lot of customers.
So far I have not been able to get anyone to even have the courtesy of responding to my emails sent to Qualcomm, Penelope, Mozilla, or any one else connected to these companies. I hope this e-mail will get to some one who cares enought about the end user Customers to respond. they can e-mail me a phone number and I will call willingly at my own expense. I hate the thought of not having Eudora with all its many features to use with all the emailing I have in our 5 companies. My phone # 281-298-0007. Praying for some help I remain;
Sincerely,
