Google Maps Mania, an unofficial Google Maps blog tracking the websites, mashups and tools being influenced by Google Maps points that Google Maps has launched maps of streets, roads and place names for India.
“Previous to this launch India showed a vast white space with the “Map” view toggled on making only satellite imagery available. The street maps that have been added for Indian cities also show symbols for various amenities such as hotels, police stations, cinemas and more. This is a significant addition for Google Maps due to the size of the population in India that will be able to take advantage of this new mapping data.”
See India on Google Maps. I tried checking around the capital New Delhi on Google maps, and indeed you can visit the streets and colonies in detail, though the maps detail is insufficient to locate your house, as possible on Google Earth. Its still nice to look around your neighborhood…

In a country where street names and city name change like nappy change for babies, I really wonder who will bother to keep updating those maps.
I fully agree with Kapil. The least Indian government can do is to switch to scientific nomenclature for our roads and streets.
I hope good sense prevails in our politicians and someone takes a step in this direction.
Thanks for the link back to my blog.. I also have all India Google Maps Mashups listed here at this URL:
