Creative Commons India Licenses Launched

Creative Commons, famous for its ’some rights reserved’ licenses allowing creative work to be shared and built upon, unveiled a localized Indian version of its innovative licensing system in India. Creative Commons International, an offshoot of the licensing project dedicated to the drafting and eventual adoption of jurisdiction-specific licenses, now covers 35 countries worldwide. View the Indian CC licenses. Now CC India now has its own blog.

The project was officially launched at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Bombay, as part of Asia’s largest technology festival held in Mumbai called Techfest 2007. Read more about the Creative Commons India launch on January 26th at KReSIT auditoriurm at IIT Bombay, Mumbai.

In which context would Creative Commons work in India? In Europe and USA the copyright laws are abused, everything is overprotected and commercialized, so CC arose as a response to that. But in India, so many creators don’t even own rights to their own work, they stand mute, watching others get commercial gain out of their work.”

Its a welcome move to see Creative Commons licenses in India.
