Google Summer of Code 2007 : Student Applications Open
Google Summer of Code is a program that offers student developers stipends to write code for various open source projects. Google Summer of Code 2007 is now accepting student applications. The program started off in 2005, is now in its third year.
Google Summer of Code has several goals:
* Get more open source code created and released for the benefit of all
* Inspire young developers to begin participating in open source development
* Help open source projects identify and bring in new developers and committers
* Provide students in Computer Science and related fields the opportunity to do work related to their academic pursuits during the summer.
* Give students more exposure to real-world software development scenarios (e.g., distributed development, software licensing questions, mailing-list etiquette)
Of course there is money to be earned too. Google will provide a stipend of 5000 USD per accepted student developer, of which 4500 USD goes to the student and 500 USD goes to the mentoring organization.
There is a long list of Mentoring Organizations participating in Google Summer of Code 2007 and they are promoting ideas for you to work on. There are some ideas developing at Creative Commons, GNU project, Google, Mozilla, Wikimedia, and Wordpress. Send in your student application today.
