One Day Blog Silence to Honor Victims at Virginia Tech
April 18th, 2007On April 30th 2007, the Blogosphere will hold a One-Day Blog Silence in honor of the victims at Virginia Tech. Cho Seung-Hui, an undergraduate student in his senior year as an English major at Virginia Tech went on a shooting rampage causing multiple fatalities at Norris Hall on the Virginia Tech campus on April 16, 2007.

Steli Efti started the One Day Blog Silence Initiative in honor towards the victims of Virginia. Silence can say more then a thousand words.
Though many bloggers have supported the cause, others claim that blogging is not about silence, but actually spreading the message. Deborah Ng at About Weblogs speaks out that
“I blogged about how bloggers were the first people to get the news out to the world. Do you see why it’s so important for bloggers NOT to be quiet? We need to discuss the issues, not maintain silence.”
Lorelle questions that will you honor the one day of blog silence or use this as a platform to speak out about world victimization and violence?
“A day of silence is a memoriam. It is not a reason to stop blogging. It’s not a reason to stop talking. If anything, preparation before and after the event are the best times to do some serious talking and blogging.”
Will you observe Blog Silence on April 30?

Why on Apr 30? Why not today?
This kinda thing is not gonna do anything.
No, I won’t be silent. I’ll be speaking out against violence on that very day, not just the days before and after.

I don’t stop blogging just because someone declares I should. The idea of a memoriam is a nice one, but there are better ways to commemorate loss than to shut down part of the web for a day.
