Thge PETA fifth annual Proggy Awards recognize animal-friendly achievement in 21st century culture and commerce. Yahoo! Inc. won the award for Most Vegetarian- and Earth-Friendly Corporate Cafeteria, while DogPile was the Most Animal-Friendly Search Engine!

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) says the Proggy award winners have helped people discover, access, and explore delicious vegan food options, trendy animal-friendly fashion, and outstanding cruelty-free beauty products and household products.

Yahoo Cafe UrlsYahoo! Inc. walked away with the Most Vegetarian- and Earth-Friendly Corporate Cafeteria for its employee dining hall at Yahoo’s Sunnyvale, California, headquarters.

The cafeteria serves more than 6,000 meals per day and features a variety of vegetarian options at each station, including an Asian bowl with Gardein or tofu, pasta and veggie marinara, Boca burgers, a vegan mezze plate, a salad bar, and more along with strategically placed posters pointing out the benefits of a vegetarian diet for the environment, resources, and health.

Yahoo! acknowledged the award with further green answers

Whether they realize it or not, the thousands of Yahoos fed by Bon Appetit Management Company in our headquarters cafeteria (known as “URLs”) and beyond are provided with made-from-scratch food choices that minimize our impact on the environment. We are availed with dozens of vegetarian and vegan options, organics galore, ingredients from local farms, antibiotic-free meats, sustainable seafood, and biodegradable to-go containers. The kitchen staff even saves the vegetable oil from our fryers to create biodiesel fuel.

Most Animal-Friendly Search Engine was DogPile.com, a metasearch tool that searches multiple search engines simultaneously

Since 1996, Dogpile.com and its mascot, Arfie, have helped the curious metasearch multiple search engines simultaneously. While you read about Arfie’s adventures on the company’s Web site and even e-mail him, you will also come across Dogpile’s many references to adopting animals from shelters. Steering Web surfers to sites where they can rescue and support abandoned and abused animals makes Dogpile the search to find.
