February 22nd, 2009
ADVERTISEMENTS

Slumdog Millionaire is nominated for 10 Oscar awards as the 81st Academy Awards ceremony, which will go live in a few more hours on February 22, 2009. Will it create the same magic at the Oscars?

Slumdog Millionaire is a film directed by Danny Boyle, based on the Boeke Prize-winning and Commonwealth Writers’ Prize-nominated novel Q and A by Indian author Vikas Swarup. Set and filmed in India, Slumdog Millionaire tells the story of a young man from the slums of Mumbai who appears on the Indian version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” and wins the show.

Starring actors Dev Patel, Anil Kapoor, Freida Pinto and Irfan Khan, the film has already won five Critics’ Choice Awards, four Golden Globes, and seven BAFTA Awards, including Best Film, and has now been nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Read more about the movie.

Associated Press says it might actually win

While there are close races in key categories, this year’s show again suffers from a predictability factor for the top prize. Best picture is expected to go to “Slumdog Millionaire,” the movie that has won the same honor at every other awards ceremony that matters.
