I myself use Kaspersky, dont know whether AVG got better recently. I dont use a software firewall since that’s what the router is for :)

The combination of Zone alarm and anti spyware spybot search and destroy is superb. You can do without anti virus in protecting your pc by simply configuring these two. But if you want to be on safer side you can install anti virus. My experience with free anti virus like avast, antivir is not that good. One type of anti virus is effective for certain type of virus only and others it do not detect. you uninstall the present one and install the next it would again find some virus. :)
CC Cleaner is also good registry and startup cleaning utility.

This depends on how often and intensively you use your computer. Make sure you have backups and know how to configure all software.
