The host blog can also benefit with guest blogging. His blog would have fresh articles and fresh ideas from the guest bloggers.
As for the guest blogger’s site, guest blogging is a good way in increasing his site’s rank in search engine.

I had heard of this before but no-one has ever explained it in detail like this. Thanks for this information. As I am new to most of this, is there a way to find blogs who allow guest posting, or is it a matter of sending the owner an email. I would happily write information of a decent quality and standard and it is great to now know where to put the link in. Personally, I would never have put it in so early on, so shows what I know.

Your last point was the best point, that being to make sure you go back to those blogs you guest post on to see if there are any comments, then responding to those people. I understand how one can forget that, however, since you might not be told when your article is being posted, and thus you might not get notification sometimes.
