I keep getting a javascript error popup when I attempt posting a comment. Does this occur for anyone else? I don’t exactly have the most current computer so possibly that is the problem.

Comments that add to the articles discussion are useful. You are right posting a meaningless complement just to but in a link is not beneficial.

“It is good enough to simply say “I wrote a post that is related…” and let the reader decide whether to look or not”

The problem with that is, if the reader is interested, they will have to search through the site to find the relevant post.
Unless you mean that your name should link to the relevant post, that would make it easier for interested readers.

Thanks for writing about comments and the real value they offer I am only just starting out as a serious blogger and I am beginning to realise so much the importance of comments not only as a writer of blogs but as a reader of many. I have over the years read truly fascinating posts but rarely stopped to say thanks or have my imput.
