Microsoft now lets you play Age of Empires (AOE) Online game for free. Age of Empires is one of the biggest bestselling strategy games having sold more than 20 million copies worldwide and has defined real-time strategy (RTS) games for the PC.

Age of Empires (AOE) fans can now join in the closed beta test for playing Age of Empires game online for free. What is special in the online version is that you can download and play AOE from anywhere and cooperative multiplayer quests and trading are combined with familiar empire creation and resource management.
The game now invites players to create a living, growing online world that’s shared with friends around the world through Games for Windows LIVE, an online gaming network related to Xbox LIVE. Anyone with a LIVE account can see their friends online and send and receive voice messages, text messages, and game invites. In Age of Empires Online, players can use the service to invite friends for a cooperative quest or a friendly challenge in the local arena, trade goods and weapons, and visit each other’s capital cities.

How to play AOE Online?
To participate in the Beta, you need a gamertag that connects to Xbox LIVE and the Games for Windows LIVE client. If you already have a Games for Windows – LIVE gamertag or an Xbox LIVE gamertag with a Silver or Gold account, you simply need to download the latest version of the Games for Windows – LIVE client. If you do not have a gamertag, you can create one online. Download the client or create a gamertag
Sign in with your gamertag’s Windows Live ID / get registered with Connect, complete the short questionnaire and you will be contacted by email if you are selected to participate in the Beta.
System requirements are steep.
- A Windows Experience Index score of 3.0 or higher or…
- At least 2 gigahertz CPU, 128 MB video card, 3GB Hard Disc
- Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7
- 1 gigabyte (GB) total system RAM (2 GB recommended)
- Fast Internet connection to downloading large (500 MB–2 GB) builds
Age of Empires Online will release exclusively on Games for Windows – LIVE in 2011 and currently is running in Closed Beta. AOE III is one of the best games I have ever played.

Wow, thats awesome! I used to play Ages of Empire back when it first came out(god I am getting old) , so it would be neat to be able to play it again without having to really install anything or try to get it to work on my machine. Of course, like Judy, I don’t have as much time to play computer games anymore :(
Now that is awesome news. I used to be an AOE junkie. I can’t tell you how many hours I wasted on that game. I can still make all the same sounds that those characters used to make. Or was that the orinigal version of Warcraft I am thinking of?
