Its no longer easy to register chinese .cn domain names, as registrants are required to provide ID proof. Recent reports indicate that domain buyers are required to meet in person and confirm personal information.

As per the latest PCWorld report -

The new regulations, dated Feb. 8 but only posted on the Web sites of certain provincial telecom regulators starting Monday, require Internet service providers that help people register a Web site with authorities to meet the applicant in person and collect a personal photo. Applicants must also submit other information and a description of their site’s content, including anything that needs “advance or special approval.”

All Web sites are affected because China’s IT ministry has said sites without government records will have their domain name resolution terminated by the end of September, essentially making them inaccessible. China’s state-owned network operators have closed over 130,000 sites without records in recent weeks, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

Though this policy is not yet live on the CNNIC, an earlier notification on the China Internet Network Information Center, the state network information center of China (Dec 2009) states

In order to further enhance the authenticity, accuracy, and integrality of the domain name registration information, now notify as following:

1. Domain name applicants need to submit the formal paper based application material when making the online application to the registrar. The application material includes the original application form with business seal, company business license (photocopy), and registrant ID (photocopy).

2. Registrar should carefully review the application material. When application is deemed qualified, registrar need to submit the application material via fax or E-mail to CNNIC, and withhold the original application material.

3. From the day of the submission of online application, if CNNIC does not receive the formal paper based application material within 5 days or the application material auditing is not qualified, the domain name to be applied will be deleted.

If you read the .cn domain name faq, you find that Chinese Domain Name are not available for individuals. So that leaves many of us out anyway. This is all part of the China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology effort to create records for all Web sites in the country.

On the other hand, anyone can register the top level domains like .com, .net, .org etc. on any top domain name registrar like GoDaddy without showing any proof of identity or residence. You can also protect your identity by using private domain name registration services.

In this article I’m going to explain the steps involved to transfer domain name from one registrar to another. If you have couple of domain names, it is better to keep all of them in a single registrar. Below mentioned steps are common and can be applied to all the top domain registrars.

1. Purchase Domain Transfer At The Your New Registrar
Normally if you purchase a domain transfer, your new registrar will let you to keep all the time remaining on your existing registration and provide One-Year free extension. After the purchase of domain transfer, your domain at the new registrar will require an Authorization Code. Your new registrar will send an email to you which contains “Transaction ID” and “Security Code”.

2. Request Authorization Code At Current Registrar
Login to your current registrar account and request for Authorization Code. But remember you should have turned off the domain protection or your domain should be unlocked before requesting the authorization code from the current registrar.

3. Authorization Code Received From Current Registrar
You will receive an email from current registrar with “Authorization Code”. Now you can begin the domain transfer from the new registrar using the authorization code. Login to your new registrar and begin the transfer process. Then the new registrar will display the status as “Authorization Required” and choose “ Begin Transfer Authorization”(Recommended).

Now enter the authorization code that you received from the current registrar through mail and complete the process. After completing this step, the status will be displayed as “Pending Current Registrar approval” and choose “Accept transfer at current registrar” (Recommended).

4. Email Notification From Current Registrar
After completing all these steps, you will receive an email from your current registrar confirming your transfer request. You don’t need to take any action if you want to accept the transfer. If you wish to cancel the transfer, follow the link provided in the email.

You will receive an email like this :

We received notification on November 5, 2008 5:11:27 PM EDT that you have requested to transfer to another domain name registrar. If you would like to proceed with this transfer you do not need to respond to this message…..

…..If we do not hear from you by November 10, 2008 5:11:27 PM EDT, this transfer will proceed.  We are committed to providing you with the solutions, services, and support to help you succeed online. We hope to continue serving you in the future.

5. Domain Transfer Completed To New Registrar
You will get a confirmation email from your new registrar received approximately four days after initiating the transfer at the current registrar. Remember that the current registrar has up to 5 days to release the transfer of the domain.

Now Pre-Registration of .MX domain names is open for everyone without organization or location restrictions. But the catch is you need to already own a .com.mx domain name as of now.

But we got private nameservers, specific to our domain name, like this

Set Up Private Nameservers for Domain Names

When you login to your domain name registrar (we use Godaddy) to change DNS settings, you would simply need to edit the nameservers for your domain name to those suggested by your host and it would propagate over a few hours. But when we tried changing our domain nameserver, we kept getting “Nameserver not registered” errors.

We wasted a lot of precious time and effort on this, believing maybe the IP was not yet registered and linked to these nameservers. But actually this time it needed a little more technical skill than before.

The trick is to locate the Host Summary details, which would normally be empty. Click the add link there to add  your new private nameservers with their IP there. Create separate entry for each nameserver.

Once you set your host name and IP, then the Host Summary details, which were blank before, now looks like this

Now you can go ahead and change  your nameservers the usual way and those “Nameserver not registered” errors will no longer be there, and your new nameserver change request will be accepted.
