In this article I’m going to explain the steps involved to transfer domain name from one registrar to another. If you have couple of domain names, it is better to keep all of them in a single registrar. Below mentioned steps are common and can be applied to all the top domain registrars.

1. Purchase Domain Transfer At The Your New Registrar
Normally if you purchase a domain transfer, your new registrar will let you to keep all the time remaining on your existing registration and provide One-Year free extension. After the purchase of domain transfer, your domain at the new registrar will require an Authorization Code. Your new registrar will send an email to you which contains “Transaction ID” and “Security Code”.

2. Request Authorization Code At Current Registrar
Login to your current registrar account and request for Authorization Code. But remember you should have turned off the domain protection or your domain should be unlocked before requesting the authorization code from the current registrar.

3. Authorization Code Received From Current Registrar
You will receive an email from current registrar with “Authorization Code”. Now you can begin the domain transfer from the new registrar using the authorization code. Login to your new registrar and begin the transfer process. Then the new registrar will display the status as “Authorization Required” and choose “ Begin Transfer Authorization”(Recommended).

Now enter the authorization code that you received from the current registrar through mail and complete the process. After completing this step, the status will be displayed as “Pending Current Registrar approval” and choose “Accept transfer at current registrar” (Recommended).

4. Email Notification From Current Registrar
After completing all these steps, you will receive an email from your current registrar confirming your transfer request. You don’t need to take any action if you want to accept the transfer. If you wish to cancel the transfer, follow the link provided in the email.

You will receive an email like this :

We received notification on November 5, 2008 5:11:27 PM EDT that you have requested to transfer to another domain name registrar. If you would like to proceed with this transfer you do not need to respond to this message…..

…..If we do not hear from you by November 10, 2008 5:11:27 PM EDT, this transfer will proceed. We are committed to providing you with the solutions, services, and support to help you succeed online. We hope to continue serving you in the future.

5. Domain Transfer Completed To New Registrar
You will get a confirmation email from your new registrar received approximately four days after initiating the transfer at the current registrar. Remember that the current registrar has up to 5 days to release the transfer of the domain.

Have you ever transferred a domain name to a new registrar? If so, please share your experience here.

Its incredible that DotAsia has found this unique incentive to promote .asia domain name sales.

How to get a free mini USB drive?

First you register your .Asia domain for 2 years or more, with a participating registrar. There are many participating partners, but we prefer to buy our domain names from GoDaddy.

You will be sent a redemption code by email a week after your domain is registered. The go to FreeB.Asia and enter your redemption code and .Asia domain name. Confirm your postal address and a USB memory stick will be sent to you via mail within 6-8 weeks. FreeB USB memory stick promotional offer is valid from July 6 to October 6 2009 or while supplies last.

Who is promoting the offer?

DotAsia is a not-for-profit organization that oversees governance of .Asia domain names and promotes its Internet development and adoption across Asia. DotAsia has come up with this unique deal and it will surely promote .asia domain name sales.

I think this will start a trend where lesser known domain name registries will offer freebies to domain name buyers to promote sales. Who minds extra free gifts with domain names… I don’t.

Godaddy, a popular domain name registrar sent an email that persons who owned a .com.mx prior to March 1, 2009 can apply for the .MX domain names. However, if you owned a .com.mx prior to March 1, you can transfer domain to them and then pre-register for the .mx. domain at Go Daddy.

Remember if you do not own a .com.mx, you do not qualify for the pre-registration period. Pre-Registration period ends July 31, 2009 and after that open public registration begins September 1, 2009.

If you have anything remotely to do with Mexico, its a good idea to get your own .MX domain name. Also it is a good idea to convert your .com.mx domain name to .mx which is much better. You can visit nic.mx and registry.mx (non-english) for more information.

But setting up private nameservers is a little different, when you try changing the nameservers with your domain name registrar.

Usually your webhosting gives their nameservers to use, like this

ns1.knownhost.com
ns2.knownhost.com

But we got private nameservers, specific to our domain name, like this

ns1.quickonlinetips.com
ns1.quickonlinetips.com

Set Up Private Nameservers for Domain Names

When you login to your domain name registrar (we use Godaddy) to change DNS settings, you would simply need to edit the nameservers for your domain name to those suggested by your host and it would propagate over a few hours. But when we tried changing our domain nameserver, we kept getting “Nameserver not registered” errors.

We wasted a lot of precious time and effort on this, believing maybe the IP was not yet registered and linked to these nameservers. But actually this time it needed a little more technical skill than before.

The trick is to locate the Host Summary details, which would normally be empty. Click the add link there to add your new private nameservers with their IP there. Create separate entry for each nameserver.

Once you set your host name and IP, then the Host Summary details, which were blank before, now looks like this

Now you can go ahead and change your nameservers the usual way and those “Nameserver not registered” errors will no longer be there, and your new nameserver change request will be accepted.

Keep subscribed to share more of our experiences on shifting to VPS. Need private nameservers? We got them at Knownhost.

As a suggestion to why choose .TV, they remind potential domain name registrants about a sinking Tuvalu - I am confused if they want people to register to support .tv, or they are warning us about what happens to .tv if Tuvalu happens to sink one day…

Tuvalu is a Polynesian island nation located in the Pacific Ocean. With a population of 11,992, it is the the third-least-populated independent country in the world. At just 26 square kilometres (10 sq mi) Tuvalu is the fourth smallest country in the world. At its highest, Tuvalu is only 4.5m above sea level, and global warming threatens to sink this small island nation following sea level rise caused by climate change. There are many reports suggesting this sinking threat.

So will .tv domain names continue to exist if Tuvalu sinks away?

Update: Apparently an old USA Today article says

VeriSign spokesman Tom Galvin tells me that a defunct country’s Internet domain lives on. For instance, you can still find addresses on .su the domain for the Soviet Union.

Anyway, as Galvin points out, Tuvalu would not necessarily cease to exist. Apparently, the laws of the sea say that a country is a country, even if underwater. Sopoaga has said in speeches, “Our sovereignty would not be threatened. Our claim would be maintained on this spot.”

Chinese users can type a keyword in the web browser and be redirected to urls of those registered keywords. So if you manage to buy some popular internet keywords, you can direct lots of targeted traffic from China.

Chinese Internet Keywords

Who runs the Internet Keywords? It was initiated by CNNIC (China Internet Network Information Center), the state network information center of China.

How do Internet keywords work? When a Chinese user types a keyword in the address bar in Chinese characters, the internet user is automatically redirected to the corresponding URL. This helps in faster web browsing without the need to type the whole url. This particularly works well for long complicated urls.

What can Internet keywords consist of? Internet Keywords can be composed of Chinese characters, alphabets, number and symbols, but cannot exceed 31 characters.

How to start using Internet Keywords? Chinese users first need to download the ‘Internet Keyword Client-End Software’, easily available with registrars and CNNIC, and then they can access any website that has an internet keyword registered.

How to register Internet Keywords? There are many CNNIC-accredited Internet Keyword registrars, both domestic and overseas, who will register internet keywords. Since the domestic internet keyword registrars are all Chinese, you can try the 2 officially listed international internet keywords registrars – IP Mirror and Webnic.

Wait! haven’t I heard this before? – A popular similar service was RealNames which worked in association with Microsoft IE, but it shut down in 2002.

Can individuals buy Internet keywords? Registration is opened to companies as well as individuals.

What are the basic terms of registering internet keywords? You cannot just register any internet keyword because you can afford to buy them. There are some basic rules -
1. You must already have an active website/URL for the Internet Keyword
2. The Internet Keyword must show relevance to the content of the URL
3. An applicant cannot register Internet Keywords with no legitimate right

Will keyword be registered instantly? Registration is not immediate, pending approval and audit by CNNIC and is approved usually in 3 – 5 working days.

What is the cost of internet keywords? Prices vary depending on the type of keyword. Here are some approximate prices.
Common Internet Keywords: US$ 50-69
Local Generic Words: US$ 299-345
Common Generic Words: US$ 599-690
Platinum Generic Words: US$ 1199-1380

Do you still register domain names only? Try registering Internet keywords and tap a whole new web audience. if you have registered internet keywords before, please share your experience in comments.

Earlier we tried Indian domain name registrars to buy .IN Domain names, but missed the numerous free features offered by Godaddy… not any more.

If you try registering a new domain name at Godaddy today, you will find new options to register Indian domain names like .in and .co.in, ind.in, .net.in, .org.in, .gen.in, .firm.in! So register .in domain names for $14.99 per year only.

This also means if you are unhappy with your current .IN registrar, you can now transfer .in domain names to Godaddy for a cheap fee. There are so many top-level domain names out there, I am glad Godaddy has included .IN now. Now I can manage domain names like a pro by consolidating our domains portfolio.

India launched the .in or .co.in domain names for websites and e-mail IDs in 2005 to popularise Indian identity in the world, and since then the accredited registrars list is gradually increasing.

They have started accepting applications for trademarks from businesses and organizations worldwide.

.tel will allow individuals and businesses alike to store and manage all their contact information and keywords directly in the DNS without the need to build, host or manage a website. This enables the ability to host personal (or corporate) contact information directly in the DNS, which can then be universally accessible. This stands in contrast to the typical use of the DNS for other TLDs, in which the DNS only provides a mapping between domain names and IP addresses.

The sunrise period has opened on 3 December 2008 and will closes on 2 February 2009. Applications are being accepted by ICANN accredited .tel domain name registrars. Only owners and licensees of trademarks registered with national effect may apply. Trademarks must have been applied for prior to 30 May 2008 and registered prior to the date the Sunrise application is submitted. Sunrise registrations carry a three-year term and are selected on first-come, first-served basis.

The Landrush phase will open on 3 February 2009 and closes on 23 March 2009 wherein applications will only be accepted through ICANN accredited .tel registrars and domain registration will be open to everyone. Any domain that is not registered during Sunrise will be eligible for Landrush registration at a premium price. General Availability opens at 15:00 GMT on 24 March 2009.

ICANN has delegated to Telnic Limited, the .tel Sponsoring Organization, the responsibility for developing, implementing and policing certain policies related to the .tel Top Level Domain and its community. If you want to try .tel before launch – You can join the VIP.tel beta program and try the .tel domain name for free before you buy one, and get a url like YourName.VIP.tel

Remember how .ME domain names went through the similar cycle. Lets see how much buzz .tel domain names generate.

Its true that different bloggers require different features and functions on their blogging tools. Nevertheless, certain comparison key points that are commonly used for solving the dilemma stated above.

Free Hosting or Domain Hosting

Cost – A blog on third party platform is normally free; while hosting/domain renewal cost are the basic expenses for a blog on its own domain.

Maintenance – A blog on third party platform is theoretically maintenance-free; while on the other hand you need to spend extra time in maintaining a blog with its own hosting.

Flexibility – A blog running on its own domain and hosting has the privilege to be customized freely; while a Blogspot or WordPress blog has certain limitations on its outlook and functionality designs.

Branding & Monetization – Better monetization is the biggest advantage of having a blog on its own domain. Since you can customize it in any way, you can monetize it in many different and better ways. On the other hand the monetization options on free sites are either not present or are very limited especially when your URL looks long and ugly, something like: myblog.blogspot.com.

Ownership – Experts call free blogs rented houses while own domain is a real estate for them, reason being the ownership rights. On established sites like Blogger and Wordpress, this may not be the issue, but on small sites, if the sites get shut down youll also have great chances to lose your blog.

From above few factors one can easily figure out if he should go for a unique domain for blog or not. To make it clearer lets conclude some options out of the above discussion:

When is the right time to go with a unique domain?

When you wish to make more money via your blog.

When you wish to offer more to your readers with various web functions and applications.

When you wish to further monetize the web traffic from your free blog.

Optional, when you need the blog to convey a professional image in business.

When should you rely on a free blogging platform?

When monetization is not the prime concern.

When you are broke and cannot pay $5/mo for your hosting cost.

You dont want to take the pain of back end management of your blog.

So should your blog run on its own hosting?

Apparently theres no one-fit-to-all answer here for our questions. Theres no big harm in having a blog on free sites (as famous bloggers like Seth Godin are hosting his blog on TypePad as well); or running it on its own hosting and domain (as hosting cost nowadays is really cheap) the choice is, after all, very dependant on your own preferences.
