Recent reports indicate that domain buyers are required to meet in person and confirm personal information.

As per the latest PCWorld report -

The new regulations, dated Feb. 8 but only posted on the Web sites of certain provincial telecom regulators starting Monday, require Internet service providers that help people register a Web site with authorities to meet the applicant in person and collect a personal photo. Applicants must also submit other information and a description of their site’s content, including anything that needs “advance or special approval.”

All Web sites are affected because China’s IT ministry has said sites without government records will have their domain name resolution terminated by the end of September, essentially making them inaccessible. China’s state-owned network operators have closed over 130,000 sites without records in recent weeks, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

Though this policy is not yet live on the CNNIC, an earlier notification on the China Internet Network Information Center, the state network information center of China (Dec 2009) states

In order to further enhance the authenticity, accuracy, and integrality of the domain name registration information, now notify as following:

1. Domain name applicants need to submit the formal paper based application material when making the online application to the registrar. The application material includes the original application form with business seal, company business license (photocopy), and registrant ID (photocopy).

2. Registrar should carefully review the application material. When application is deemed qualified, registrar need to submit the application material via fax or E-mail to CNNIC, and withhold the original application material.

3. From the day of the submission of online application, if CNNIC does not receive the formal paper based application material within 5 days or the application material auditing is not qualified, the domain name to be applied will be deleted.

If you read the .cn domain name faq, you find that Chinese Domain Name are not available for individuals. So that leaves many of us out anyway. This is all part of the China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology effort to create records for all Web sites in the country.

On the other hand, anyone can register the top level domains like .com, .net, .org etc. on any top domain name registrar like GoDaddy without showing any proof of identity or residence. You can also protect your identity by using private domain name registration services.

Well technically it totals up to $1.17 as you have to add ICANN fee of 18 cents also. So does this Godaddy promo code work? Well we checked it out and it does work

We host many domain names with Godaddy (including this one) and now these are really cheap domain names. It seems the Godaddy promo code is valid only for new domain name buys and customers will have to pay usual domain renewal fee after 1 year, which is also under $10. But I suggest you add on private registration and protect your online privacy too.

So what is with the Superbowl coupon code? It is well know that Godaddy has long been creating controversial Superbowl commercials featuring Godaddy girls; which often get listed in the most effective Super Bowl Commercials and Best Super Bowl Commercials on YouTube.

Anyways here are some tips to buy domain names successfully and manage domain names like a pro. (Found via SlickDeals)

What are the benefits of buying Expired Domain Names? There are hundreds of expired domains that become available for sale every day and in most cases the reason they are for sale is because the registered owners have failed to renew them for any number of reasons.

Some reasons could include:

The owner has forgotten to re-register the domain

The owner simply does not want the domain any longer

The domain once belonged to a business that has since closed down or gone into liquidation and an $8 domain name will be the last thing on their mind!

When a domain name is not re-registered by the owner it will expire and will then be considered an “expired domain”.

Domainers (people who buy and sell domains for a profit) are constantly scanning these lists of expired domains looking for hidden gems. It is therefore no surprise that bloggers and internet marketers are also tapping into the potential of expired domain names to buy and use for building their own websites.

One site where you can find expiring domains on a daily basis is Freshdrop

Freshdrop pulls in data feeds of expired domains from well known domain auction houses across the internet. These include SnapNames, Afternic, Sedo and Dynadot to name a few. Freshdrop organizes these data feeds and lists the expired domain names in an organized fashion on their site.

The other well known site that you can find lists of expiring domain names is TDNAM (The Domain Name After Market). TDNAM is a popular auction site where you can bid for expired domain names.

3 main reasons for buying expired domain names:

1) Backlinks

You will find that expired domains often have a number of links from various places around the web. As I mentioned earlier, some expired domain names are listed in the DMOZ directory and/or the Google and Yahoo directory. These are strong links which Google looks fondly upon and if you were to build a site on the domain concerned then it will most likely help your search engine rankings.

2) Profit

Profit is one of the key incentives which interests people in looking at buying expired domain names. For example domains with pagerank, age, and strong backlinks are considered very desirable and can be sold to a wide range of people (businesses, internet marketers, and bloggers for example) who are in search of a domain name which they can build a site on.

3) Building a website on the expired domain

I have found in my experience that building a website on the expired domain is one of the main reasons people consider buying expired domain names. You will find that pagerank, age, backlinks as well as reputation normally take years to accumulate. If you are fortunate to be able to buy an expired domain name that already has these factors, the website you build on the expired domain will (or should) therefore have a distinct advantage over other newer sites built around the same niche.

Remember:
These days when I look through lists of expired domains I concentrate solely on looking for a hidden gem that I can either resell for a profit or build into a website to generate income.

There will always be some exceptional expired domain names that can be sourced and found from the expired domain lists, however you need to be aware that there are also a great deal of low quality expired domain names sitting in the same pool. It is undoubtedly a skill and in some ways an art to be able to uncover the hidden gems waiting to be found.

In this article I’m going to explain the steps involved to transfer domain name from one registrar to another. If you have couple of domain names, it is better to keep all of them in a single registrar. Below mentioned steps are common and can be applied to all the top domain registrars.

1. Purchase Domain Transfer At The Your New Registrar
Normally if you purchase a domain transfer, your new registrar will let you to keep all the time remaining on your existing registration and provide One-Year free extension. After the purchase of domain transfer, your domain at the new registrar will require an Authorization Code. Your new registrar will send an email to you which contains “Transaction ID” and “Security Code”.

2. Request Authorization Code At Current Registrar
Login to your current registrar account and request for Authorization Code. But remember you should have turned off the domain protection or your domain should be unlocked before requesting the authorization code from the current registrar.

3. Authorization Code Received From Current Registrar
You will receive an email from current registrar with “Authorization Code”. Now you can begin the domain transfer from the new registrar using the authorization code. Login to your new registrar and begin the transfer process. Then the new registrar will display the status as “Authorization Required” and choose “ Begin Transfer Authorization”(Recommended).

Now enter the authorization code that you received from the current registrar through mail and complete the process. After completing this step, the status will be displayed as “Pending Current Registrar approval” and choose “Accept transfer at current registrar” (Recommended).

4. Email Notification From Current Registrar
After completing all these steps, you will receive an email from your current registrar confirming your transfer request. You don’t need to take any action if you want to accept the transfer. If you wish to cancel the transfer, follow the link provided in the email.

You will receive an email like this :

We received notification on November 5, 2008 5:11:27 PM EDT that you have requested to transfer to another domain name registrar. If you would like to proceed with this transfer you do not need to respond to this message…..

…..If we do not hear from you by November 10, 2008 5:11:27 PM EDT, this transfer will proceed. We are committed to providing you with the solutions, services, and support to help you succeed online. We hope to continue serving you in the future.

5. Domain Transfer Completed To New Registrar
You will get a confirmation email from your new registrar received approximately four days after initiating the transfer at the current registrar. Remember that the current registrar has up to 5 days to release the transfer of the domain.

Have you ever transferred a domain name to a new registrar? If so, please share your experience here.

Its incredible that DotAsia has found this unique incentive to promote .asia domain name sales.

How to get a free mini USB drive?

First you register your .Asia domain for 2 years or more, with a participating registrar. There are many participating partners, but we prefer to buy our domain names from GoDaddy.

You will be sent a redemption code by email a week after your domain is registered. The go to FreeB.Asia and enter your redemption code and .Asia domain name. Confirm your postal address and a USB memory stick will be sent to you via mail within 6-8 weeks. FreeB USB memory stick promotional offer is valid from July 6 to October 6 2009 or while supplies last.

Who is promoting the offer?

DotAsia is a not-for-profit organization that oversees governance of .Asia domain names and promotes its Internet development and adoption across Asia. DotAsia has come up with this unique deal and it will surely promote .asia domain name sales.

I think this will start a trend where lesser known domain name registries will offer freebies to domain name buyers to promote sales. Who minds extra free gifts with domain names… I don’t.

Godaddy, a popular domain name registrar sent an email that persons who owned a .com.mx prior to March 1, 2009 can apply for the .MX domain names. However, if you owned a .com.mx prior to March 1, you can transfer domain to them and then pre-register for the .mx. domain at Go Daddy.

Remember if you do not own a .com.mx, you do not qualify for the pre-registration period. Pre-Registration period ends July 31, 2009 and after that open public registration begins September 1, 2009.

If you have anything remotely to do with Mexico, its a good idea to get your own .MX domain name. Also it is a good idea to convert your .com.mx domain name to .mx which is much better. You can visit nic.mx and registry.mx (non-english) for more information.

But setting up private nameservers is a little different, when you try changing the nameservers with your domain name registrar.

Usually your webhosting gives their nameservers to use, like this

ns1.knownhost.com
ns2.knownhost.com

But we got private nameservers, specific to our domain name, like this

ns1.quickonlinetips.com
ns1.quickonlinetips.com

Set Up Private Nameservers for Domain Names

When you login to your domain name registrar (we use Godaddy) to change DNS settings, you would simply need to edit the nameservers for your domain name to those suggested by your host and it would propagate over a few hours. But when we tried changing our domain nameserver, we kept getting “Nameserver not registered” errors.

We wasted a lot of precious time and effort on this, believing maybe the IP was not yet registered and linked to these nameservers. But actually this time it needed a little more technical skill than before.

The trick is to locate the Host Summary details, which would normally be empty. Click the add link there to add your new private nameservers with their IP there. Create separate entry for each nameserver.

Once you set your host name and IP, then the Host Summary details, which were blank before, now looks like this

Now you can go ahead and change your nameservers the usual way and those “Nameserver not registered” errors will no longer be there, and your new nameserver change request will be accepted.

Keep subscribed to share more of our experiences on shifting to VPS. Need private nameservers? We got them at Knownhost.

As a suggestion to why choose .TV, they remind potential domain name registrants about a sinking Tuvalu - I am confused if they want people to register to support .tv, or they are warning us about what happens to .tv if Tuvalu happens to sink one day…

Tuvalu is a Polynesian island nation located in the Pacific Ocean. With a population of 11,992, it is the the third-least-populated independent country in the world. At just 26 square kilometres (10 sq mi) Tuvalu is the fourth smallest country in the world. At its highest, Tuvalu is only 4.5m above sea level, and global warming threatens to sink this small island nation following sea level rise caused by climate change. There are many reports suggesting this sinking threat.

So will .tv domain names continue to exist if Tuvalu sinks away?

Update: Apparently an old USA Today article says

VeriSign spokesman Tom Galvin tells me that a defunct country’s Internet domain lives on. For instance, you can still find addresses on .su the domain for the Soviet Union.

Anyway, as Galvin points out, Tuvalu would not necessarily cease to exist. Apparently, the laws of the sea say that a country is a country, even if underwater. Sopoaga has said in speeches, “Our sovereignty would not be threatened. Our claim would be maintained on this spot.”

Noticed via Wreck & Salvage

What is the deal? Free 2 years unlimited hosting. Free domain name!

What is required? They need to verify you are an existing GeoCities customer. So you need to login to Geocities and create a new web page or edit an existing page and post the text Im off to DreamHost! on it. Since new users cannot sign up to Geocities, only existing users can do that.

What is the promo code ? When signing up for Dreamhost, put the full url to that web page you created with the notice as the promo code and youll get a 2 year plan (which would otherwise cost $214.80) totally free!

Sign up now. More step by step instructions at Technotip.
