It is a well known fact that Adsense ads perform the best when placed above the fold. “Above the fold” refers to the exact area of the screen which is visible to the user when the page has finished loading.

The area of your website or blog which gets the maximum focus is “Above the fold”. Hence, it’s common sense that advertisers would prefer sites who place ads above the fold as compared to sites who hide ads in the corners or sidebars.

Who are Brand Advertisers and Direct Advertisers?

There are two type of advertisers - Brand advertisers and Direct advertisers.

Direct advertisers look for clicks and conversions and they usually target CPC campaigns. Say Mr X owns a site about ‘Used cars’ and Mr Y is a “Direct advertiser”. Mr Y would like to place CPC advertisements in Mr X’s site and would be more interested in clicks, conversions and the Adwords campaign altogether.

Brand advertisers would focus on promoting their product and raise self awareness. They would target image ads that supports rich media. In the above example, if Mr Y had been a direct advertiser, he would like to place an image ad about his upcoming auction of used cars, you get the idea.

So What’s the Idea all about

Since brand advertisers are trying to raise awareness about their product, they are obviously selective on the type of sites where their ads are shown. Not only that, they are also concerned with the position their ads are shown on your site.

Now coming back to “Above the Fold” concept. Since Brand advertisers want visibility, they would prefer sites that have the following criteria and placements of ad units:

Content is unique, good and the site should have a targeted audience.

Has a large reader base – means more pageviews and impressions.

Ad unit is placed above the fold for greater visibility.

How to optimize Your Ad unit Placements for Brand Advertisers

If you want to optimize your site for Brand advertisers, here are a few things you should know:

1. Use Adsense placement targeting
Assign unique channels to the ad units you are targeting for the Brand advertisers. Then login to your Adsense account, go to channels and click “Edit channel”. Select the checkbox “Show this channel to advertisers as an ad placement”.

Enter a custom description of your site and a brief description regarding the placement position of the channel. Believe me, this works.

2. Place ad units above the fold targeted to attract “Brand Advertisers”
Place at least one ad unit above the fold. Then use Adsense placement targeting and attract advertisers to show ads on that channel. The placement targeting would not work out if you hide the ads in the bottom of your blog template.

3. Switch to image ads on high pageview pages
Some pages of your site have high pageviews e.g the homepage or may be the landing page you created for one of your products. Using an image ad above the fold makes sense and appeals to the brand advertisers, as described earlier in the article.

4. Don’t be shy showcasing ads
Don’t hide advertisements in the corner or footer of your blog template. Some of the best placement positions are: under the title of your post, header, top of sidebar etc. Even big brands like Techcrunch have a big leaderboard in the site header, so why should you feel shy showing the ads?

If the visitor is genuinely interested on the content of the landing page, the advertisements would appear as related links or services. So there is nothing called as “Annoying Factor”. Dump that idea.

5. Make your Site Advertisement Friendly
While you make efforts to optimize your site for visitors, you should also make life easy for the advertisers. Reserve highly focused regions for the advertisements and remove unnecessary elements from your blog template. As for example, you may want to move the email subscription box, which is placed in the header of your site to the sidebar. Then use a 468 X 70 or 728 X 90 advertisement block in the header and apply “Image ads” for that ad unit.

These are a few techniques which you can use to attract “Brand Advertisers” on your site. Don’t think that you will get the results in a couple of days. It takes some time to build trust among the advertisers and you will gradually see the wheel rolling.

Have you optimized your site for Brand advertisers? Would love to hear your ideas in the comments section.

Donations will go to Partners In Health, to provide medical aid on the ground in Haiti throughout the ongoing reconstruction efforts.

Go ahead and fill the Adsense donation form. AdSense publishers can donate AdSense earnings accrued through January 31, 2010 directly to the earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.

Donation request will not be processed if you donate more than your unpaid balance through January 31, 2010, are subject to tax-withholding, have a disabled account or your account is pending submission of tax information, PIN or phone number.

Some important rules to remember are that you still have to follow AdSense Program Policies. It is very important you do not inform your readers that your Adsense revenue is donated to Charity which might encourage your readers to click your ads, and get your Adsense account banned.

How much of your Adsense dollars are you donating?

Getting a adsense account approved is a bit difficult task for most of the new bloggers as Google Adsense team is more strict than ever now. In this article I am going to explain why your adsense account is not getting approved.

I got the idea to write this article after my friend’s application got rejected by Adsense team and they replied him back giving some guidelines to try his luck in the future.

Your application for Google Adsense will not be approved if your website or blog do not satisfy any of the following guidelines :

First of all your website must be your own top level domain like www.example.com and not the sub domain like www.example.com/blog.

Your website must contain only substantial and original content.

You must provide accurate personal information with your application that matches the information on your domain registration.

Your website must comply with Google Adsense program policies which are given here : https://www.google.com/adsense/policies

So if your website/blog satisfies these guidelines then don’t forget and move ahead to apply for an Adsense account.

P.S. : These guidelines are given by Google and not by me so these are mandatory conditions for any website to get an Adsense account :)

Guest author Simrandeep Singh blogs at TricksDaddy about blogging, social networking, tech tips and tricks, design and software reviews. You can also write a guest article and share your web experiences.

Editor note: - I suggest you also read more application approval tips from Google which suggests you also need complete names, valid addresses, valid email, working links, easy navigation, supported languages and in some countries like China and India, they also require publishers to have owned their sites for 6 months.

Landing Pages are one of the most important part of your PPC (pay-per-click) campaign as it would be the first page which a user sees on your website after clicking your ad. Well designed landing pages can increase your conversion rate and make your PPC campaign more effective.

The success and failure of your PPC Campaign depends completely on the success and failure of Landing pages. In this article I would be discussing few tips which you can implement to make better landing pages for your PPC Campaign.

1. Compelling Headline: – Your landing page should contain an attention grabbing headline as it is the first thing a user sees on your landing page. Your headline should speak what your users want to hear. For eg:- If your user want to lose weight, your headline could be “ how to lose 20 pounds in 1 week”. Make your headline strong and bold so that it can stand out from the rest of the page.

2. Highly Relevant Content: - Your landing page should be relevant to your ads. It should contain similar title, description and keywords you are using in your ad copy. For e.g. – If you are talking about Blue Nike Shoes in your ad copy then your landing page should also talk about Blue Nike Shoes. Create separate customized pages for each offer. The traffic you gets from PPC campaign looks for specific thing only, and if they don’t find your landing page relevant to the ad they had clicked, they would go away.

3. Unique and Useful Content: – Your landing page should contain unique and useful content. Don’t fill your landing page with tones of information because nobody has time to read it till end. Content should answer the questions of your customers and tell them about the product. Information on your landing page should be in the inverted pyramid structure. The conclusion and most important points should be at the top and less supportive information should be at the bottom.

4. Clear Call to Action Link: – The main purpose of your landing page is to encourage visitors you get from your PPC campaign to take the desired action like buying a product or giving information so that you can attain your own goal. The call to action link like “Click Here” or “Buy Now” should be above the fold i.e. it should be easily visible to the visitor without scrolling the page.

5. Use Images: – Images speak more than words. Use relevant images describing your product and offers so that your visitors can get a clear idea about the product they will get after buying.

6. Minimal Navigation: - Remove the navigational links from your landing page which can distract the user’s mind. By removing the navigational links you can control the content on your landing pages which you want your users to see. It would help you to create a suitable environment in which your user can take the decision easily.

7. Analyze Results: - Create multiple landing pages for the same offer and analyze which pages convert better as compared to others. These tests would help you to know which things work better so that you can improve them more to increase your conversion rate.

Dont go looking for the feature just now – it will be rolled out first to publishers in North America and Europe followed by rest of the world.

The credit may only be used with a self-managed AdWords account with a billing address in North America.

Are you ready to discuss your opinions about AdSense with a market researcher? Sign up for a Google Adsense Interview.

Another option for Successful Adsense users is that they can share their success stories with the Google Adsense team and get featured in the Google Adsense success stories page where there are lots of great optimization tips for both new and expert Adsense publishers. But by getting interviews, and enticing with $50 Adwords, now they can get many more publishers to share their stories and success mantra to make money online.

Normally Adsense allows only one ad unit in feeds, the ad size of which they automatically decide. But then Techcrunch with 2 million RSS readers is an ideal site for testing new Adsense variations with 2 ad units and ad links too!

Here is a screenshot of the Techcrunch feed in Google Reader.

Obviously this is another Google adsense feed advertising test in going on. See how strategically Ad link units have been placed at the bottom of articles to serve as a navigation menu and two 300×250 ad units are placed side by side.

Now here is what is stranger – I tried loading the Techcrunch feed in IE, but that displayed only one ad unit. I loaded the feed in Bloglines, and still one ad unit per article. Obviously like all of us, Techcrunch can add only one adsense ad to feeds. So is this a Google reader test that is adding these additional ads? Have you seen any other feeds with multiple ads in Google reader?

This is another addition to several strange Adsense ads we spotted before like multiple ad fonts, 2×2 ads, favicons, no titles, titles in italics and no Ads by Google and interactive keywords.

I guess it was not too difficult to block ads on preview pages.

Why is it good that they blocked Adsense ads on WordPress Preview pages – No false impressions inflating cost for CPM advertisers. No accidental clicks on your own Adsense ads. Google Adsense bot visits your final published page only for better targeting. No falsely raised ad page impressions, modifying your Adsense ad statistics reports.
