Gmail Basic Html Version – Offers multiple browser support

Gmail launched it new basic html email version which allows support for old and multiple web browsers, which previously did not support gmail. It was frustating not being able to use gmail with an invitation with you if you had an old computer with a older version of web browser, gmail was not supported. This is an ongoing effort of the Google gmail free email service to convert more email users from other popular free email sevices like Yahoo Mail, Hotmail and Rediffmail.

Basic HTML view lets you access your Gmail messages from almost any computer running almost any web browser, even old ones (not just IE5.5+, Mozilla, and Safari).

A small link at the bottom of the inbox allows you to convert between the standard and basic html versions.

If you sign in to Gmail using a browser that isn’t fully supported, you’ll automatically be directed to a basic HTML view. This basic HTML view that is compatible with almost any web browser.

You can access Gmail via a PC, Linux, or Macintosh (Mac) computer with one of the following fully supported browsers:

  • Internet Explorer IE 5.5+
  • Netscape 7.1+
  • Mozilla 1.4+
  • Firefox 0.8+
  • Safari 1.2.1+

Basic HTML view works with the following browsers now as well as many others:

  • Internet Explorer IE 4.0+
  • Netscape 4.07+
  • Opera 6.03+

It is essential to have cookies enabled to use Gmail. Full functioning also required you to enable JavaScript.

However, some interesting email features are not available in the basic html view, including the following:

  • Filter creation
  • Settings
  • Spell checker
  • Keyboard shortcuts
  • Address auto-complete

Now that your old computer or older version of web browser supports gmail, it is time to give it a try. But gmail is not available for free to all and requirea an invitation.
