Gmail is Google Mail in UK

Gmail is changing the free email service name to Google Mail in the UK and starting October 19, 2005, all new accounts will have addresses.

Why the change from Gmail to Googlemail?

“We have been involved in a dispute regarding the Gmail trademark in the UK. Another company has claimed rights to the Gmail name. We have tried to resolve this dispute through negotiations, but our efforts have failed.

We are still working with the courts and trademark office to protect our ability to use the Gmail name, but in the meantime, we want you to have an email address you can rely on.”

All new addresses will be addresses in the UK. From the UK, you will only be able to send Google Mail invitations. If your recipient is also in the UK, he or she will only be able to create an account. For older email account holders, all messages are being sent and delivered as before! Stop junk email.

I wold like to have Google e-mail, but try as I might I cannot find how to sign up or whatever one is required to do. The closest I got was a window asking for my mobile number, but the list of locations was limited to the Pacific rim! What do I do???
