I know several hotmail email users who have no idea what Windows Live Mail is all about. Windows Live signifies the development of a new generation of Microsoft services and users have often been confused about the rebranding. It seems Microsoft realized the importance and loyalty of the Hotmail brand and decided to rename Windows Live Mail as Windows Live Hotmail.
Windows Live Mail was formerly code-named Kahuna and will replace MSN Hotmail once it is complete. Their blog announces this
“As we prepare to launch the final version of our new web mail service, we recognize the importance of ensuring that our 260+ million existing customers come over to the new service smoothly and without confusion. By adopting the name “Windows Live Hotmail”, we believe we’re bringing together the best of both worlds – new and old. We’re able to offer the great new technology that Windows Live has to offer while also bringing the emotional connection many existing and loyal users have with Hotmail.”
I think this is a good move and will help millions of Hotmail subscribers upgrade to Windows Live Hotmail with confidence and of course a feature rich email service.
Confusion about branding is not a new issue. Read the story about Internet explorer 7 with plus and without plus. Consumer feedback is very important and I am glad tech companies listen.
