{"id":10867,"date":"2010-01-27T23:02:57","date_gmt":"2010-01-27T18:02:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.quickonlinetips.com\/archives\/?p=10867"},"modified":"2020-05-24T10:06:37","modified_gmt":"2020-05-24T04:36:37","slug":"i-icon-online-ad-privacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.quickonlinetips.com\/archives\/2010\/01\/i-icon-online-ad-privacy\/","title":{"rendered":"Power-I: New Ad Icon for Online Privacy Info"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The advertising industry has accepted a new standard icon called the <strong>Power-I <\/strong>or the little \u201ci\u201d &#8211; which you will spot on most online ads soon, and is a new step towards better online privacy standards.<\/p>\n<p>Spot the white &#8220;i&#8221; on the blue background in the sample ad.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10868\" title=\"power-i ads\" src=\"https:\/\/www.quickonlinetips.com\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/power-i.png\" alt=\"power-i ads\" width=\"250\" height=\"159\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.quickonlinetips.com\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/power-i.png 250w, https:\/\/www.quickonlinetips.com\/archives\/wp-content\/uploads\/power-i-150x95.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The NYT reports that most major companies running online ads will add the icon to their ads in this year with small notes like \u201cWhy did I  get this ad?\u201d and when it is clicked,\u00a0 they get a\u00a0 page explaining how the advertiser uses their <strong>web surfing history and  demographic profile<\/strong> to display targeted and behavioral ads.<\/p>\n<p>Most sites carry a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quickonlinetips.com\/archives\/privacy\/\">privacy policy<\/a>, which is required as per terms of service of most advertising companies (even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quickonlinetips.com\/archives\/2008\/02\/new-google-adsense-terms-post-a-privacy-policy\/\">Google Adsense requires privacy policy<\/a> pages from publishers), which clearly highlights how advertisers track visitor information for ad targeting.<\/p>\n<p>But usually the <strong>privacy policy<\/strong> is low down in the site footer and hardly clicked and read. This standard Power I icon will make such privacy policy more visible and will actually be clicked are read by site visitors &#8211; making them aware of their online privacy rights and usage.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think about this new icon?
