A missing headline makes an ad harder to understand and click. Then I noticed my 336&#215;280 rectangle ad units on the front page showing <strong>text ads without any titles<\/strong>. In the second ad unit on the page, the fourth text ad had no title. In the third ad unit, it was the first text ad.<\/p>\n<p>Those image ads without links might have invited a higher click-through rate. But <strong>missing title links<\/strong> in text ads would definitely lead to fewer clicks, because the blue title link is where readers expect to click. Without it, readers would not know where to click.<\/p>\n<p>It looked like a bug in the system. As far as I knew, you could not create a Google AdWords text ad without a title, and why would anyone want to? It&#8217;s all about clicks.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_the_headline_matters_in_a_text_ad\"><\/span>Why the headline matters in a text ad<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>It tells readers what the ad is about.<\/strong> The headline is the largest, most visible line in a text ad.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It is the obvious click target.<\/strong> Readers are used to clicking the linked headline.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It builds trust.<\/strong> An ad with missing parts looks broken, and broken-looking ads make the whole page look less reliable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For a publisher, a broken ad means lower click-through rate and lower earnings on that unit. Text ads are still served, alongside image, video and rich media ads, and Google controls how they are laid out to fit each slot. Publishers have far less control over individual ad styling than in 2006. Test the page with plugins disabled or in a private browser window.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don&#8217;t edit the AdSense code.<\/strong> Changing ad code or hiding ad elements with CSS can break AdSense policies.
