How can you change, or shorten excerpt length (or even increase it) easily. Its become important because if you have a large site and Google is indexing thousands of archive pages in tags and categories, then these excerpts can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quickonlinetips.com\/archives\/2010\/03\/bad-duplicate-content\/\">duplicate content<\/a> issues and lead to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quickonlinetips.com\/archives\/2013\/06\/delete-urls-with-bad-backlinks-to-remove-google-penalty\/\">Google penalty<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>WordPress Excerpts<\/h2>\n<p>If you look inside your WordPress theme <em>index.php<\/em> or <em>archive.php<\/em>, you will find this excerpt tag coming beneath the post title, which displays post excerpt in the front page or archives, category pages.<\/p>\n<p><code>&lt;?php\u00a0the_excerpt();\u00a0?&gt;<\/code><\/p>\n<p>It will display 55 words by default and then end abruptly with [&#8230;]. So how can you change excerpt length?<\/p>\n<h2>Change excerpt length in WordPress<\/h2>\n<p>Edit your theme functions file functions.php and add the following code at the bottom\u00a0just above the last line of the code\u00a0<code>?&gt;<\/code><\/p>\n<pre><code>function new_excerpt_length($length) {\r\nreturn 20;\r\n}\r\nadd_filter('excerpt_length', 'new_excerpt_length');<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>Remember to place it just above the last line of the code <code>?&gt;<\/code> or your <em>functions.php<\/em> file may become unusable. Change the 20 and use and number to specify the words you want to display in excerpts.<\/p>\n<p>Its a good idea to backup your themes file before editing it, as any error will give major WordPress theme errors.
