As Gmail and Yahoo Mail kept offering more free storage, Rediff decided to outdo them. On 7 March 2007 Rediff.com India announced unlimited storage space for Rediffmail, along with an improved search to help users find old emails.

The launch was memorable. The announcement was made on a boat that took guests for a ride in the Arabian Sea off the Gateway of India, with banners and balloons carrying the news. A TV, print and online campaign followed.

Rediff’s pitch was that users could store unlimited photos, music and videos without deleting mail, and that with unlimited storage and no closure of IDs, small businesses and individuals could keep one Rediffmail ID as their permanent address.

I also noticed that the rediffmail.com address redirected to the rediff.com portal, where you logged in through a form. That simple redirect gave the portal extra pageviews from the millions of Rediffmail users who logged in every day. More competition among Indian email providers meant the consumer won.

The 2007 email storage race

Rediff was not alone. 2007 was the year of the free storage race:

Yahoo Mail also promised unlimited storage in 2007, then later set fixed limits. See how Yahoo Mail storage went from unlimited to 20 GB.

Gmail kept raising its free quota and started selling extra storage for Gmail and Picasa.

Over time, “unlimited” offers across the industry gave way to fixed quotas and paid upgrades, because storing everyone’s mail forever is expensive.

Rediffmail storage today: how to manage your mailbox

Rediff.com is still running, and since 2024 it has been controlled by Infibeam Avenues.
