{"id":223,"date":"2005-05-13T15:08:00","date_gmt":"2005-05-13T09:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.quickonlinetips.com\/archives\/2005\/05\/13\/fix-bad-online-advertising-techniques-design\/"},"modified":"2020-03-02T21:16:28","modified_gmt":"2020-03-02T15:46:28","slug":"fix-bad-online-advertising-techniques-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.quickonlinetips.com\/archives\/2005\/05\/fix-bad-online-advertising-techniques-design\/","title":{"rendered":"Fix Bad Online Advertising Techniques and Design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jakob Nielsen&#8217;s Alertbox offer a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nngroup.com\/articles\/most-hated-advertising-techniques\/\" rel=\"noopener\">few highlights<\/a> of the User Experience 2004 conference where John Boyd from Yahoo! and Christian Rohrer from eBay presented a large body of research on how users perceive online advertising.<\/p>\n<p>When users were asked how various aspects of online ads affected their Web experience, they<strong> rated the following attributes most negatively.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pops-up in front of your window -95%<\/li>\n<li>Loads slowly -94%<\/li>\n<li>Tries to trick you into clicking on it -94%<\/li>\n<li>Does not have a &#8220;Close&#8221; button -93%<\/li>\n<li>Covers what you are trying to see -93%<\/li>\n<li>Doesn&#8217;t say what it is for -92%<\/li>\n<li>Moves content around -92%<\/li>\n<li>Occupies most of the page -90%<\/li>\n<li>Blinks on and off -87%<\/li>\n<li>Floats across the screen -79%<\/li>\n<li>Automatically plays sound -79%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Users were particularly <strong>pleased with ads that clearly:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>indicate what will happen if people click on them<\/li>\n<li>relate to what people are doing online<\/li>\n<li>identify themselves as advertisements<\/li>\n<li>present information about what they are advertising<\/li>\n<li>provide additional information without having to leave the page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is based on 605 respondents in 2004; similar numbers were found in 2002 and 2003.<br \/>\nNow you know how to improve placement of advertisements on your page and fix up your web design.
