This guide shows what the theme looks like, its main features, how to install it in 2026, and whether it is still a good choice for a new site.

Quick answer: Twenty Twelve is still listed in the official WordPress.org theme directory and is still updated by the WordPress team. You can install it from Appearance > Themes in your dashboard. It is a clean, responsive classic theme, but for a new site a recent default theme with full site editing will give you more design control.

Table of Contents

Toggle

Twenty Twelve WordPress theme: how it looks

Key features of Twenty Twelve

How to download and install Twenty Twelve

Is Twenty Twelve still a good theme in 2026?

FAQ

Is the Twenty Twelve theme free?

Is Twenty Twelve responsive?

Does Twenty Twelve support full site editing?

Where can I see a demo of Twenty Twelve?

Twenty Twelve WordPress theme: how it looks

When we first wrote about it in 2012, Twenty Twelve had just appeared on WordPress.com and then on WordPress.org. If you plan to customize the code, create a child theme so updates don’t overwrite your changes, and keep themes current with automatic theme updates.

Is Twenty Twelve still a good theme in 2026?

Twenty Twelve still works and still receives maintenance updates from the WordPress team, so it is safe for an existing site that uses it. It is a classic theme, which means you customize it with widgets, menus and the Customizer rather than the block-based Site Editor.

For a brand new site, the latest default themes are usually a better starting point. They support full site editing, so you can change headers, footers and templates visually without code. Twenty Twelve remains a good pick if you like a simple, blog-focused layout and want something light and familiar.

Starting a new blog?
