In 2008 Google offered webmasters a free “Enhance 404 pages” widget that added smart suggestions to error pages, and we tried it on QuickOnlineTips. That widget is long gone, but the idea behind it is more useful than ever. Google no longer offers it. Today, build your own custom 404 page with a friendly message, a site search box, links to popular or related pages and your homepage, make sure it returns a real 404 status code, and monitor broken links in Google Search Console.

Table of Contents

Toggle

What was the Google 404 widget?

What makes a good custom 404 page in 2026

Return the right status code

How to create a custom 404 page in WordPress

FAQ

Does Google still offer the 404 widget?

Do 404 errors hurt SEO?

What should a custom 404 page include?

What is a soft 404?

What was the Google 404 widget?

In August 2008 we found a new experimental feature in Google Webmaster Tools (now Google Search Console) called Enhance 404 pages. Webmasters could copy a snippet of code into their 404 page template, and the widget would show helpful suggestions instead of a bare error message: a search box for your site, plus closest-match and alternative URL suggestions for the address the visitor was trying to reach.

We pasted the code into our own 404 page and the search box worked well, but because the feature was experimental, the closest-match, alternative URL and sitemap suggestions never appeared for our site.
