When blogging becomes a real income, tax planning matters as much as traffic. These are the tax-saving and investment options we’ve learned about over the years as Indian bloggers, updated for the 2026 tax year. Rules change every Budget, so treat this as a starting point to discuss with your chartered accountant.

Quick answer: Blogging income (AdSense, affiliate commissions, sponsored posts) is taxed in India as business or professional income. First, choose between the new tax regime (the default, with lower rates and income up to ₹12 lakh effectively tax-free after rebate) and the old regime (which allows deductions like PPF under Section 80C and health insurance under 80D). Then claim your genuine blogging expenses, consider presumptive taxation, and invest surplus income in options like PPF, mutual fund SIPs and fixed deposits.

Disclaimer: this is general information, not tax or investment advice. It has lower slab rates and a rebate that makes income up to ₹12 lakh effectively tax-free (from FY 2025-26), but it doesn’t allow most deductions such as 80C, 80D and 80G. The old regime has higher rates but lets you claim those deductions.

Many bloggers with moderate income and few investments pay less under the new regime. If you invest heavily in tax-saving products, compare both with the tax calculator on the Income Tax e-filing portal or with your CA. Note that a new Income-tax Act, 2025 applies from 1 April 2026, so some section numbers have changed, though the familiar names like “80C” are still widely used.

1. Claim your blogging business expenses

This applies under both regimes, and it’s often the biggest saving. You pay tax on profit, not total income. Genuine blogging expenses can include:

Web hosting, domain names, CDN and email services

Themes, plugins, SEO tools and software subscriptions

Laptops, phones and cameras used for work (claimed as depreciation)

Internet bills, freelance writers and designers, advertising

Keep every invoice and receipt. If your turnover is below the limits, presumptive taxation (Section 44AD for business, or 44ADA for eligible professionals) lets you declare a fixed share of receipts as profit without detailed accounts. Ask your CA which applies to you.

2. Public Provident Fund (PPF)

PPF remains one of the safest long-term options. You can invest up to ₹1.5 lakh a year, and the interest is tax-free. The rate is set every quarter by the government; it’s 7.1% for October–December 2026. The account runs for 15 years and can be extended in 5-year blocks. Deposits qualify for the 80C deduction only under the old regime, but the tax-free interest benefits everyone.

3. Term life insurance

If blogging is your family’s main income, a term insurance plan is essential. It pays a large sum to your family if something happens to you, for a low yearly premium. A common rule of thumb is cover of 10–15 times your annual income. The younger you buy, the lower the premium. Premiums count towards 80C under the old regime. Plans that return your premium or pay yearly income give far less cover for much higher premiums.

4. Health insurance

Self-employed bloggers don’t have an employer’s health cover, so buy a family floater policy early, while premiums are low and before waiting periods matter. Under the old regime, premiums are deductible under Section 80D (up to ₹25,000 for yourself and family, more for senior-citizen parents).

5. Mutual fund SIPs

A systematic investment plan (SIP) invests a fixed amount, such as ₹5,000, every month, buying more units when markets fall and fewer when they rise. Over many years, diversified equity funds have generated strong long-term returns, but they carry market risk. For equity funds held over 12 months, gains above ₹1.25 lakh a year are taxed at 12.5% (long-term capital gains). I also track my stock watchlist and portfolio in Google Sheets.

6. Fixed deposits and tax-free bonds

Bank fixed deposits are simple and safe for money you may need soon, though the interest is fully taxable. Keep an emergency fund of 6–12 months of expenses, as blogging income can be irregular.

We once bought tax-free bonds paying over 9%. The government hasn’t allowed new tax-free bond issues for years, but existing bonds still trade on the stock exchange.

7. Donations

Donations to eligible charities and relief funds can be deducted under Section 80G, but only under the old regime. Keep the receipts.

Don’t forget GST, advance tax and TDS

Advance tax: if your tax for the year exceeds ₹10,000, pay it in quarterly instalments to avoid interest.

GST: registration is required once your turnover crosses the threshold (generally ₹20 lakh for services). Income from foreign clients such as AdSense is usually treated as an export of services; your CA can advise on filing a Letter of Undertaking.

Check Form 26AS/AIS: Indian companies may deduct TDS on payments to you, which you can claim back in your return.

In the end, it’s worth hiring a good chartered accountant to assess your blogging income and expenses correctly, choose the right regime and file your returns on time.

How do you manage tax on your blogging income?
