Her single “Womanizer”, the lead single from her 2008 album Circus, had just jumped to number one on the Billboard Hot 100. To match her comeback, Britney Spears planned a whole new way to interact with fans online.

She unveiled the new site at BritneySpears.com, and Team Britney ran a blog on it (built on Movable Type). The site promised new content, photos, videos and exclusive footage that the paparazzi had never got. She introduced the site in an interview on Entertainment Tonight.

Blogging, Twitter and social media in 2008

The website was part of a full online push. At the time, Britney also had:

her own YouTube channel for videos

a Twitter account, @therealbritney, for short updates

fan pages on Myspace and Facebook

In 2008 this was still new for a major pop star. Most celebrities spoke to fans through magazines and TV, and few ran their own blogs or tweeted. Britney’s team showed how a star could own the conversation online instead of leaving it to gossip sites.

Britney’s long history online

Britney had long ruled the internet. In 2008, though, she was no longer the most dangerous celebrity to search for online.

Finding the official Britney Spears website and channels today

Fan sites and fake accounts are common for any big star. To stay safe:

Type the address yourself: go to BritneySpears.com directly rather than clicking links in messages.

Check social links from the official site: the official site is the best place to find links to her real social profiles.

Be careful with search results: searches for celebrity names can lead to spam or malware, so stick to well-known sites.

Ignore offers that seem too good: fake celebrity accounts often promise free tickets or giveaways to collect personal details.

FAQ

When did Britney Spears start blogging?

Her team launched a blog on her new official website in October 2008, around the release of Womanizer.

What was Britney Spears’ Twitter handle?

In 2008 she joined Twitter as @therealbritney.
