Outage or Your Connection (2026)

In December 2008 our broadband suddenly ran at half the speed we paid for, and our ISP’s support desk said it would take 48 hours to fix. The cause wasn’t our router at all: undersea cables in the Mediterranean had been cut, slowing internet traffic across the Middle East and South Asia. If you’re asking why is my internet slow today, the first job is to work out whether the problem is in your home, with your provider, or somewhere much bigger.

Quick answer: Run a speed test with a device plugged into the router by cable. If wired speed is fine, the problem is your Wi-Fi or devices. If wired speed is also slow, restart the modem and router, then check your ISP’s status page or app and Cloudflare Radar for outages. If many people and sites are affected at once, it may be a wider network problem such as an outage at your provider or, more rarely, damaged undersea cables, and you can only wait for repairs.

<p class="ez-toc-title" You can see the routes on TeleGeography’s Submarine Cable Map. When several cables on a busy route are damaged at once, traffic is squeezed onto the remaining paths and whole countries can slow down.

What happened in 2008

On 19 December 2008 the SEA-ME-WE 4, SEA-ME-WE 3 and FLAG cables, among others, were cut in the Mediterranean between Egypt and Italy. These cables carried a large share of traffic between Europe, the Middle East and South Asia, so users in India, the Gulf and nearby countries saw slow speeds for days. A ship’s anchor was suspected, and it was the second major cut on that route that year, which highlighted how much of the world’s internet depends on a handful of cables.

It still happens

Cable damage hasn’t gone away. In early 2024, several cables in the Red Sea, including Seacom, AAE-1 and EIG, were damaged, affecting traffic between Asia, Africa and Europe until operators rerouted it. Today there are many more cables and better rerouting than in 2008, so most users see slower international sites rather than a total outage, but repairs at sea still take time.

What you can do during a big outage

Use local or regional services, which often stay fast because their servers are nearby.

Lower video quality on streaming and video calls.

Switch to mobile data if a different network isn’t affected, or tether your laptop to your phone.

Postpone large downloads and cloud backups until speeds recover.

If slow speeds are an everyday problem rather than a one-off, see how to get the most from your internet service provider, and how your country compares in our list of countries with the fastest internet.

FAQ

Why is my internet slow all of a sudden?

Common causes are a router that needs restarting, a device downloading updates, Wi-Fi interference, or an outage at your provider.
