World’s Biggest Writing by Car GPS

Nick Newcomen did a road trip over 30 days to create the world’s biggest writing by using his car GPS tracking device (GPS) as a “pen.”  The writing “Read Ayn Rand” consists of 12,328 miles traveled and stretches from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean and covers 30 American states.

So how did he do this?

The first step involved identifying on a map the route he would need to drive in order to spell out “Read Ayn Rand.” Then he drove the route. He used a GPS logger (Qstarz BT-Q1000X) to record his “writing.” He turned on the device when he wanted to write and turned off the device between letters. He then input the recorded GPS data into Google Earth resulting in the image you see above.

Any Rand was a famous novelist who wrote books like novels Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead. You can track the journey on Google Earth, or click any part of the map on their site and get short videos about the places.
