Ideal Weight Calculator: Healthy Weight for Your Height
This ideal weight calculator shows a healthy target weight for your height and sex using four well-known medical formulas, Robinson, Miller, Devine and Hamwi, alongside the weight range that gives a healthy BMI. Seeing them side by side gives a realistic range rather than one magic number.

Quick answer: For a man 170 cm (5 ft 7 in) tall the four formulas give an ideal weight of about 65 to 67 kg (144 to 147 lb), and a healthy BMI range of 53.5 to 72 kg (118 to 159 lb). For a woman of the same height, the formulas give about 61 to 63 kg (134 to 138 lb).
How to use the ideal weight calculator
- Choose your sex and units.
- Enter your height in centimeters, or in feet and inches.
- Read the range from the four formulas and the healthy BMI range below them.
The ideal body weight formulas
| Formula | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| Robinson | 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch over 5 ft | 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch over 5 ft |
| Miller | 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch | 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch |
| Devine | 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch | 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch |
| Hamwi | 48 kg + 2.7 kg per inch | 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg per inch |
The Devine formula was created to work out medicine doses and is still used in hospitals today. None of the formulas look at age, muscle or frame size, which is why the results differ by a few kilograms.
Ideal weight vs healthy weight range
A single “ideal” number can be misleading. The World Health Organization uses a healthy BMI of 18.5 to 24.9, which gives a range of about 15 to 20 kg for most adult heights. Muscular people, older adults and people with a large frame are often healthiest toward the upper end. Some Asian health bodies use a lower cut-off of 23 for the top of the healthy range.
Things that matter more than the scale
- Waist size: belly fat carries more health risk than weight on the hips or thighs.
- Body composition: two people of the same weight can have very different amounts of fat and muscle.
- Fitness and habits: activity, sleep, diet and not smoking affect health at any weight.
These results are for general information and are not medical advice. If you want to change your weight, a doctor or dietitian can help you set a safe goal. Check your current BMI, estimate your body fat percentage, or find your daily energy needs with the calorie calculator.
FAQ
What is the ideal weight for 5 ft 5 in?
About 56 to 60 kg (125 to 132 lb) for women and 61 to 63 kg (136 to 140 lb) for men by these formulas, with a healthy BMI range of about 50 to 68 kg (111 to 150 lb).
Is ideal weight the same as healthy weight?
Not exactly. The formulas give a single estimate, while the healthy BMI range is wider and better reflects normal differences between bodies.
