Morse code timing rules

International Morse code is built on one unit of time, the length of a dot:

  • A dot is 1 unit, and a dash is 3 units.
  • The gap between dots and dashes inside a letter is 1 unit.
  • The gap between letters is 3 units, and between words 7 units.

At 15 words per minute one unit is 80 milliseconds. Speed is measured with the word “PARIS”, which is exactly 50 units long including the space after it. The sound player follows these rules exactly.

A short history of Morse code

Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail developed the code for the electric telegraph in the 1830s and 1840s. The version used today, International Morse code, was standardized in 1865 and is now maintained by the International Telecommunication Union. Ships used it for distress calls until 1999. Amateur radio operators still use it daily, because a simple Morse signal gets through when voice can’t. SOS (... --- ...) was chosen because it is easy to send and recognize, not because it stands for any words.
