Writing numbers on a cheque
- Write the amount in words on the line provided and figures in the box; banks go by the words if they differ.
- In India, start with “Rupees” and end with “Only” so nothing can be added afterwards. This tool adds both when you choose Indian Rupees.
- In the US, cents are often written as a fraction, such as “and 50/100 dollars”. The tool writes them in words, which banks also accept.
- Draw a line through any blank space after the words.
Style notes
American English usually leaves out “and” inside numbers (“one hundred twenty”), while British English says “one hundred and twenty”. Both are correct; this tool uses the shorter style. Hyphens join numbers from 21 to 99, such as “forty-two”.
