Discount Calculator: Sale Price and Percent Off
Use this discount calculator to see the final price after a percentage off and exactly how much you save. It handles stacked deals like “30% off plus an extra 10%”, adds sales tax if you want, and can work backwards from a sale price to tell you the real percent off.

Quick answer: To find a sale price, multiply the original price by (100 − discount) ÷ 100. For example, 30% off $80 is $80 × 0.70 = $56, so you save $24.
How to use the discount calculator
- Enter the original price and the discount percentage, or tap a preset like 20% or 50%.
- If the deal has a second discount, such as an extra 10% at checkout, enter it in Extra discount.
- Add your local sales tax to see the price you will actually pay at the till.
- To check a deal, use Find the percent off with the original and sale prices.
Stacked discounts are not added together
“40% off plus an extra 20%” sounds like 60% off, but the second discount applies to the already reduced price. On $100, 40% off gives $60, and 20% off $60 is $48, a total discount of 52%. The calculator shows the true combined discount whenever you use the extra discount box.

Mental maths tricks
- 10% off: move the decimal point one place left and subtract. 10% of $45 is $4.50, so you pay $40.50.
- 20% off: double the 10% figure.
- 25% off: divide by 4 and subtract, or pay three quarters.
- Buy one, get one 50% off: this is 25% off the pair.
Tax rules differ by place: in the US tax is usually added at the till, while in the UK, EU, India and Australia shelf prices normally include VAT or GST. The sales tax calculator adds or removes tax, and the percentage calculator handles any other percent question.
FAQ
How do I calculate the percent off?
Subtract the sale price from the original price, divide by the original price and multiply by 100. $120 down to $84 is 36 ÷ 120 = 30% off.
Is tax charged before or after the discount?
Usually after, on the discounted price, which is how this calculator works. Manufacturer coupons in some US states are an exception.
