Quick answer: To add tax, multiply the price by 1 + rate ÷ 100: $100 at 8.25% is $108.25. To remove tax from a total, divide by the same number: $108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100. Do not just subtract 8.25% of the total, which gives the wrong answer.

How to use the sales tax calculator

  1. Enter the amount and the tax rate, or tap a preset for a common rate.
  2. Choose whether the amount is before tax (a US shelf price or a net invoice) or including tax (a receipt total, or a UK, EU, Indian or Australian shelf price).
  3. Read the price before tax, the tax and the total. Click Copy breakdown for an invoice or expense claim.

Why removing tax needs division

Tax is a percentage of the price before tax, not of the total. If a total of $120 includes 20% VAT, the price before tax is $120 ÷ 1.20 = $100 and the VAT is $20. Taking 20% of $120 would give $24, which is too much. This is the most common mistake in VAT and GST maths, and the calculator always does it the right way.
