How Zerodha Kite login works

Kite login has two steps:

1. User ID and password. Your Zerodha client ID (like AB1234) and your Kite password.
2. Two-factor authentication (2FA). A 6-digit code from the Kite app code feature in the Kite mobile app, or from an external TOTP app such as Google Authenticator. SMS and email OTP are also available, but Zerodha recommends the app code or TOTP because they’re faster and safer (Zerodha support).

Step 1: Save your Kite login in a password manager

A password manager remembers the User ID and password for each of your Zerodha accounts and fills them in with one click. You only type each login once. When the password manager asks to save it, say yes, and it’s stored for next time.

For years I’ve used LastPass as a browser extension in Chrome and Firefox, so my Kite logins are available on every computer I use. You can also export your LastPass passwords any time. You’ll need to remember one strong master password, and you should never tick “remember this computer” on a shared or public PC.

Remember to log out of one account before you log in to the next, or use a separate browser profile for each account so you can stay logged in to several at once.

Step 2: Use an authenticator app for the Kite TOTP

The second step asks for a 6-digit code. You can use the Kite app code, but if you have several accounts, an external authenticator is easier because it shows all your codes in one place. I use Google Authenticator, which keeps a separate code for each Zerodha account.

To set up external TOTP in Kite:

1. Log in to Kite on the web and open your profile (click your User ID at the top right), then go to My profile > Password & Security.
2. Choose to enable External 2FA TOTP.
3. Scan the QR code with your authenticator app and enter the 6-digit code to confirm.

Zerodha’s TOTP setup guide has the latest steps. Each code changes every 30 seconds, so it’s much safer than an SMS OTP that can be delayed or intercepted. Microsoft Authenticator works the same way, and many password managers (including 1Password and Bitwarden’s paid plan) can store TOTP codes too.

I also use an authenticator for two-factor authentication on my email, social media and banking accounts, so all my important logins are protected the same way.

Keep your Zerodha login safe

• Only log in at kite.zerodha.com or in the official Kite app. Bookmark the page so you never land on a fake login page from a search ad or message.
• Never share your password or TOTP code with anyone, including people claiming to be from Zerodha.
• Back up your authenticator. Google Authenticator can sync codes to your Google account, so you don’t lose access if you change phones.
• Use a different strong password for each account. A password manager makes this easy.
