Boot Camp in 2026: How to Install Windows on a Mac (and What to Use on Apple Silicon)

In April 2006, Apple released Boot Camp Beta, letting Intel Macs dual-boot Windows XP alongside Mac OS X Tiger. As a long-time Windows user, I thought it would convert plenty of people like me to the Mac. Twenty years later, Boot Camp still exists, but only on Intel Macs. If you have an M1, M2, M3, M4 or newer Mac, you need a different approach. Here’s what works in 2026.

Boot Camp Windows on Mac

Quick answer: Boot Camp Assistant lets Intel-based Macs install Windows 10 in a separate partition and choose Mac or Windows at startup. Apple silicon Macs (M-series) don’t support Boot Camp. On those Macs, run the Arm version of Windows 11 in a virtual machine using Parallels Desktop, which Microsoft authorizes, or alternatives like VMware Fusion and UTM.

Does your Mac support Boot Camp?

Click the Apple menu > About This Mac. If it lists an Intel processor, Boot Camp is available. If it lists a chip such as Apple M1 or M4, it isn’t. Apple has said macOS Tahoe is the last major macOS release for Intel Macs, so Boot Camp is nearing the end of the road.

How to use Boot Camp on an Intel Mac

  1. Back up your Mac with Time Machine.
  2. Download a Windows 10 disk image (ISO) from Microsoft.
  3. Open Boot Camp Assistant from Applications > Utilities.
  4. Choose the ISO and set the Windows partition size (64GB or more recommended).
  5. Your Mac restarts into the Windows installer. Follow the steps, then let Boot Camp install the Windows drivers.
  6. To switch systems, hold the Option (Alt) key at startup and pick Mac or Windows.

Apple’s Boot Camp support pages list which Mac models support which Windows versions. Windows 11 isn’t officially supported via Boot Camp.

Windows on Apple silicon Macs

  • Parallels Desktop: runs Windows 11 for Arm side by side with macOS; most x86 Windows apps run through Microsoft’s built-in emulation.
  • VMware Fusion: free for personal use and supports Windows 11 Arm.
  • UTM: free, open source virtualization app.
  • Windows 365 or cloud PCs: stream a full Windows desktop from Microsoft’s cloud.
  • CrossOver: runs some Windows apps and games without installing Windows.

Boot Camp vs virtual machine

  • Boot Camp: full hardware speed, best for games, but you must restart to switch.
  • Virtual machine: Mac and Windows run together, easy file sharing, slightly lower performance.

Remember that Windows on a Mac needs its own antivirus protection and Windows updates.

FAQ

Can I use Boot Camp on an M1 or M2 Mac?

No. Boot Camp only works on Intel Macs. Use a virtual machine instead.

Is Boot Camp free?

Yes, Boot Camp Assistant is built into macOS on Intel Macs. You need a Windows license.

Can I install Windows 11 with Boot Camp?

Not officially. Apple’s Boot Camp drivers support up to Windows 10, and Windows 11’s TPM requirement is a barrier on Intel Macs.
