How to play hangman
- Choose a category and a level. Easy uses short words, which is perfect for children; hard uses words of eight letters or more.
- The dashes show how many letters the hidden word has.
- Guess a letter. If it is in the word, every place it appears is filled in.
- If it is not, one more part of the figure is drawn: head, body, two arms and two legs. Six wrong guesses and the round is over.
Hangman tips and tricks
- Start with vowels. Almost every English word has an A, E, I, O or U. E is the most common letter of all.
- Then try common consonants. T, N, S, R and L appear in many words.
- Look at the shape. A word ending in _ _ G might be “-ing”; a double blank might be a double letter.
- Use the category. Knowing it is a country or an animal narrows things down fast.
- Save rare letters for last. Q, Z, X and J are risky early guesses.
