The video is shown in your browser only. Nothing is recorded on or sent to our server.

Quick answer: Click Start webcam test and allow access. If you can see yourself, the camera works. The boxes show the resolution and frame rate your camera is really delivering.

How to use the webcam test

  1. Click Start webcam test and choose Allow when the browser asks.
  2. Pick a camera from the list if you have more than one, such as a laptop camera and a USB webcam, or the front and back cameras on a phone.
  3. Choose a resolution to request. The camera delivers the closest size it supports, shown under Resolution.
  4. Check the frame rate: 30 fps looks smooth; below 15 fps looks jerky, often because of low light.
  5. Click Take snapshot to save a still image, then Stop to turn the camera off.

Webcam not working? Try these fixes

  • Permission: click the camera or lock icon next to the web address, allow the camera and reload.
  • Windows: Settings, Privacy and security, Camera: turn on camera access for apps and desktop apps. Some laptops also have a privacy shutter or a camera key (often F8 or F10).
  • Mac: System Settings, Privacy and Security, Camera, and switch on your browser.
  • Busy camera: only one app can use most webcams at a time. Close Zoom, Teams, Skype, OBS or the Camera app.
  • Black picture: check the lens cover and try another USB port, ideally directly on the computer rather than a hub.

Look better on video calls

  • Light from the front: face a window or lamp. A bright window behind you turns you into a silhouette.
  • Camera at eye level: raise the laptop on books so the camera isn’t looking up at you.
  • Clean the lens: a fingerprint is the most common cause of a hazy picture.
  • Lower resolution on slow internet: apps reduce quality automatically, but 720p is usually plenty.

Why is the picture mirrored?

Most video apps show you a mirror image, because it feels natural, like a mirror. Other people see the un-mirrored view, so text on a T-shirt looks backwards to you but correct to them. Untick Mirror to see what others see.

Is this webcam test private?

Yes. The video goes from your camera straight to this page in your browser. Nothing is recorded or uploaded, and snapshots are only saved if you click Download.

Check your audio too with the mic test, or check your screen for faults with the dead pixel test.

FAQ

Why is the resolution lower than my camera’s rating?

Many webcams only reach full resolution at lower frame rates or in certain apps, and USB 2.0 ports can limit them. Try another resolution and port.
