9 Link Building Mistakes to Avoid in 2026 (and What to Do Instead)
Link building is still an important part of SEO, but the wrong links can hurt more than they help. Plenty has been written on how to get backlinks; this post covers what to avoid. Guest author Zeeshan learned the hard way: his young Blogger blog lost all its PageRank when 90% of its links came from one forum. Here are 9 link building mistakes to avoid in 2026, and what to do instead.

Quick answer: Avoid buying links or joining link schemes, repeating the same keyword anchor text, building lots of links in a sudden burst, getting most links from one site, excessive link swaps, low-quality directory and comment links, and guest posts written only for links. Earn varied, relevant links with genuinely useful content, digital PR and real relationships, and mark paid links as sponsored.

9 link building mistakes to avoid
1. Using the same anchor text everywhere
If every link to a page says “best cheap laptops”, it looks manipulated. Natural links use your brand name, the page title, bare URLs and varied phrases. Learn more about anchor text overuse.
2. Building links too fast
Jumping from 1,000 to 10,000 links in a month without a viral story or big launch looks unnatural. Steady growth is normal; sudden bought spikes are not.
3. Getting most links from one site
Zeeshan’s forum signature links made up about 90% of his backlinks, and his PageRank dropped to zero at the next update. Many links from one domain count far less than links from many different relevant sites.
4. Excessive link exchanges
Swapping links with sites in your field is fine in moderation. “Link to me and I’ll link to you” schemes at scale break Google’s spam policies.
5. Buying links without disclosing them
Paid links that pass ranking credit are against Google’s rules. Sponsored placements must use rel="sponsored" (or nofollow).
6. Low-quality directories, comments and forum spam
Mass directory submissions, blog comment links and profile links are nearly worthless and can look spammy. Comment and forum links are nofollow on most sites anyway.
7. Guest posting only for links
Guest articles stuffed with keyword links on unrelated sites are a known link scheme. Write for relevant, real audiences, and expect most guest post links to be nofollow.
8. Ignoring relevance
One link from a respected site in your niche is worth more than a hundred from unrelated sites, whatever their “authority” score.
9. Linking to bad neighbourhoods
Outbound links to spam, malware or hacked sites hurt trust. Check old posts for links to expired domains that have been taken over.
What to do instead
- Create link-worthy content: original data, tools, in-depth guides and up-to-date tutorials.
- Digital PR: pitch genuinely newsworthy stories or expert comments to journalists.
- Fix lost links: redirect old URLs that still have backlinks; here’s how to verify 301 redirects.
- Build real relationships with people in your field, through communities, podcasts and events.
- Monitor your backlinks in Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools or an Ahrefs free account.
Already made these mistakes?
Remove links you control, ask site owners to remove the worst ones, and disavow only if you have a manual action or a history of link schemes. Here’s how to fix a Google penalty.
FAQ
Are backlinks still important in 2026?
Yes, but quality and relevance matter much more than quantity.
Are nofollow links useless?
No. They can send traffic and visibility, and Google treats nofollow as a hint.
How many backlinks do I need?
There is no fixed number. Look at how many quality referring domains the pages ranking above you have.
