UUID Generator: Random v4 and v7 UUIDs / GUIDs

This UUID generator creates random, standards-compliant UUIDs (also called GUIDs) instantly. Generate one or up to 1,000 at a time, choose version 4 (random) or version 7 (sorted by time), and format them in upper case, without hyphens or with braces. You can also paste a UUID to check its version.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to or stored on our server.

Quick answer: Five fresh version 4 UUIDs appear as soon as the page loads. Click Generate for new ones, change How many for bulk output, and click Copy all.

What is a UUID?

A UUID (universally unique identifier) is a 128-bit number written as 32 hexadecimal digits in five groups, like f47ac10b-58cc-4372-a567-0e02b2c3d479. Microsoft calls the same thing a GUID (globally unique identifier). Developers use UUIDs as database keys, file names, order numbers and request IDs, because they can be created anywhere, without a central server, with practically no chance of two being the same. The current standard is RFC 9562 (2024), which replaced RFC 4122.

UUID v4 vs v7: which should I use?

  • Version 4 is 122 random bits. It is the most common choice and reveals nothing about when or where it was made.
  • Version 7 starts with the current time in milliseconds, followed by random bits. New v7 UUIDs sort in creation order, which keeps database indexes compact and fast. Many teams now prefer v7 for primary keys.
  • Version 1 (older) uses a timestamp and the computer’s network address. Avoid it for anything public.

How unique are UUIDs from this UUID generator?

A v4 UUID has 2122 possible values, about 5.3 × 1036. You would need to generate around 2.7 quintillion of them before the chance of a single duplicate reached 50%. This generator uses your browser’s cryptographic random generator, the same quality used for encryption keys.

How to read a UUID

The first digit of the third group is the version (4 in …-4372-…). The first digit of the fourth group shows the variant; for standard UUIDs it is 8, 9, a or b. Paste any UUID into Check a UUID to see this, and for v7 UUIDs, the time it was created.

Generate a UUID in code

  • JavaScript: crypto.randomUUID()
  • Python: import uuid; uuid.uuid4() (and uuid.uuid7() in Python 3.14)
  • PostgreSQL: gen_random_uuid()
  • Windows PowerShell: New-Guid; macOS and Linux: uuidgen

FAQ

Is a UUID the same as a GUID?

Yes. GUID is Microsoft’s name for a UUID. Some Microsoft tools show them in upper case with braces, which you can pick in the Format option.

Can I use these UUIDs in production?

Yes. They follow the standard and use cryptographic randomness. They are generated in your browser and never stored.

Are UUIDs secret?

No. A UUID is an identifier, not a password. Don’t rely on it alone to protect private links.
