Mic Test: Check Your Microphone Online
Run a quick mic test before a call, class or recording. Click Start mic test, allow microphone access, and talk: the meter moves when your microphone picks up sound. Then record a few seconds and play it back to hear exactly how you sound. The audio never leaves your device.
Record and play back
Your audio is processed in your browser only. Nothing is recorded on or sent to our server.
Quick answer: Click Start mic test and allow access. If the green bar moves when you speak, your microphone works. Use Record 5 seconds and play it back to check the sound quality.
How to use the mic test
- Click Start mic test. Your browser asks for permission; click Allow.
- Speak normally. The level should jump to around 20 to 60 while you talk. A peak near 100 means you may be too loud or too close.
- If you have several microphones, such as a headset, a webcam mic and a laptop mic, choose one in the Microphone list.
- Click Record 5 seconds, then play the clip to hear background noise, echo or muffled sound.
- Click Stop when finished so the browser releases the microphone.
Microphone not working? Try these fixes
- Permission blocked: click the lock or camera icon to the left of the web address and set Microphone to Allow, then reload.
- Windows: open Settings, Privacy and security, Microphone, and turn on “Let apps access your microphone” and “Let desktop apps access your microphone”. Then check Settings, System, Sound, Input for the right device and its volume.
- Mac: open System Settings, Privacy and Security, Microphone, and switch on your browser.
- Another app is using it: close Zoom, Teams, Discord or OBS and try again.
- Headset: check the mute switch on the cable or ear cup, and that the plug is in the microphone (pink) socket on older PCs.
- Bluetooth headphones: some switch to a lower-quality “headset” mode when the mic is on. That is normal.
Tips for better sound on calls
- Keep the microphone 10 to 20 cm (4 to 8 inches) from your mouth and slightly to the side.
- Soft furnishings reduce echo; bare rooms sound hollow.
- Turn off fans and close windows. Use the noise suppression setting in your meeting app.
- A cheap USB or headset microphone usually sounds better than a laptop’s built-in one.
Is this mic test private?
Yes. The sound is analysed by your browser’s Web Audio API and the test recording stays in your browser’s memory until you close the page. QuickOnlineTips never receives your audio.
Testing your camera too? Use the webcam test. For your keyboard, try the keyboard tester.
FAQ
Why don’t I see my microphone’s name?
Browsers only show device names after you allow access. Start the test once and the list fills in.
Does the mic test work on phones?
Yes, in Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone. Recording needs a recent browser version.
