What is lorem ipsum?
Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin used as filler text so that people judge a design by its layout and typography, not by the words. It comes from De finibus bonorum et malorum (“On the ends of good and evil”), written by the Roman statesman Cicero in 45 BC. The familiar passage is a garbled version of a section about pain and pleasure, with words cut and changed until they no longer make sense. Typesetters have used it since at least the 1500s, and it became standard in desktop publishing software in the 1980s.
When to use placeholder text
- Website and app mockups: fill cards, articles and buttons before the real copy is written.
- Templates and themes: show how a WordPress theme, newsletter or brochure looks with text.
- Testing layouts: check how text wraps, how long headlines break, and how a page looks with lots of content.
