What is a Microsoft MVP?
MVPs are community leaders who are not Microsoft employees. They are recognised for helping others use Microsoft technologies such as Azure, Microsoft 365, Windows, Power Platform, data and AI tools, developer technologies and security. The Microsoft MVP programme has thousands of MVPs worldwide across many award categories. It is a recognition, not a paid job.
What counts as community contribution?
- Blog posts, tutorials and technical articles.
- YouTube videos, livestreams and podcasts.
- Speaking at conferences, meetups and webinars.
- Answering questions on Microsoft Q&A, Microsoft Tech Community, Stack Overflow or GitHub.
- Running or organising user groups and events.
- Open-source projects, tools and samples.
- Books and courses.
Contributions should be technical, public, and done for the community rather than as part of your paid job. Keep links and numbers (views, attendees, answers) as evidence. Certifications are not a requirement, and content in languages other than English counts too.
How the nomination process works

New MVPs can be awarded throughout the year. Awards run for a year, and renewals happen on a fixed yearly cycle, so MVPs must keep their profile updated with their latest contributions to be re-awarded. Not renewing is fine; MVPs can step back at any time.

When we wrote this guide in 2009, Microsoft India had its own MVP website, you could nominate yourself by downloading a nomination form and emailing it, awards were reviewed every quarter, and benefits included thank-you gifts, certificates and Microsoft store vouchers. The India MVP site and forms are gone. The programme is now run globally through the MVP portal, nominations come from MVPs or Microsoft employees, and awards follow a yearly cycle, but the core idea of rewarding generous community experts is unchanged. I have applied for 2 times but there is no response form the microsoft they received the application or application get reject.

While there is little support that other companies (read red hat, IBM, oracle, adobe) have for their community contributors, the MVP program seems to be a unique thing from the Redmond company.
